Bleeding canker disease is caused by bacteria and fungus-like organisms.

Marcus Eichhorn, a forest ecologist at the University of Nottingham, said: "It might be the tree is probably getting sick from this fungal disease inside their stems, which is weakening them, so they don't have the same amount of energy to put into the conkers."

An inquest into the deaths of two people from Leicester has heard evidence from some of those responsible for maintenance of the road where it happened.

It's thought the couple got out of their vehicle after it ended up in a ditch in strong winds and heavy rain.

The inquest into their deaths has previously heard that the van was "spinning and rolling" after hitting a large patch of standing water.

Yesterday, the hearing in Nottingham was told that an inspection after the crash found a nearby drain was blocked.

The inquest also heard that there had been a similar crash earlier in the year on the same stretch of road caused by standing water. A blocked drain was found and repaired following that incident.
