    Five people were taken to hospital after a crash involving two cars.

    A 44-year-old woman who was a passenger is being treated for life threatening injuries, Nottinghamshire Police have said., external

    It happened on the A1 northbound near Blyth services at about 01:00 yesterday.

    An animal charity owner from Rutland has been crowned "conker queen" after winning the women's heats of the World Conker Championships 2017.

    The event took place in the village of Southwick in Northamptonshire over the weekend and attracted thousands of conker fans.

    Julie Freeman and John Riley.

    Julie Freeman, 45, even beat the men's champion, Chelsea Pensioner John Riley.

    She competed in a dog costume, chosen because of the charity she runs - The Mutt's Nutts - which helps elderly people look after their pets.

    A lecturer from Nottingham Trent University has said the government urgently needs to legislate body modification procedures.

    It comes after body modification artists were exposed carrying out illegal and potentially dangerous tongue splitting procedures.

    Two backstreet practitioners were filmed by BBC London preparing to illegally inject anaesthetic into undercover reporters.

    Dr Samantha Pegg, a lecturer in criminology at Nottingham Trent University and an expert on the legality of body modification procedures, said: "Extreme body modification is not covered by existing law, we don't know whether an individual's consent is enough to make it legal.

    "The practitioner could be committing a criminal offence."

    Schools in Derby will get £2.4m to help improve essential life skills including honesty, attitude and team-work.

    Derby City Council has been given the regional grant in the hope teachers and staff will focus on things other than the core subjects taught every day.

    Richard Gerver, an education consultant and a former headteacher, said: "As a city we have been struggling with some education and some of our education outcomes.

    "People need to remember that we assume that all children get the same opportunities outside of the school buildings to develop their personal qualities... we assume that all children come into school as a blank canvas but they are not."

  8. Runners suffer 'harassment' says surveypublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Eight out of 10 people in Nottingham have suffered harassment while out running according to a study.

    More than 400 runners were surveyed, with the vast majority being subjected to unwanted attention - the most common being verbal abuse, but also physical attacks.

    The survey was carried out by runner Dr David Hindley from Nottingham Trent University.

    It comes after a woman was indecently assaulted by a man during an evening run in Sherwood Rise last week, which police are investigating.
