  1. Council cautiously optimistic over budget planspublished at 10:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2017

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC Local Live

Derby City Council says it can balance the books next year without cutting services - the first time it's been able to say that since 2010 - but about 100 jobs are to go across the authority.

The council will unveil its 2018/19 budget later and says the £9.7m savings it needs to make can be achieved by improving efficiency behind the scenes.

But charges at car parks are likely to go up and council tax will rise by 5% - that's an extra £60 a year for people in a Band D property.

Cabinet member for finance, Baggy Shanker, said: "There have been some difficult decisions already been taken.

"At the moment it looks good but given inflation pressures and any other central government cuts that may be added to what we know now, that position may or may not change."

Headteacher Jason Brooks said: "Hopefully people will see sense, I understand that the local authority have to make cuts to government but hopefully they will look at different areas apart from venerable groups, which seems to be the trend."

Zoe Barker, who was 18 at the time, said she didn't want to cause offence to the Aboriginal community and she felt the members of her party who did climb it were being selfish.

She added visitors can still enjoy the attraction without going up it.
