    The Foxes boss said: "Riyad is a valuable player in this team. When I have discussed with him, he’s enjoying his football. He’s a happy player. This is a good thing.”

    An elderly man who was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Clay Cross has died.

    Alan Roberts, 74, was crossing High Street when he was hit by a grey Mazda MX-5, which was travelling towards Alfreton, Derbyshire Police said.

    Mr Roberts, of North Wingfield, was taken to Northern General Hospital but has now died.

    It happened at about 18:40 on 2 January.

    The Riders travel to the Plymouth Raiders tomorrow night in the quarter finals of the BBL Trophy, before hosting Worcester Wolves just 24 hours later at the Leicester Sports Arena.

    The 32-year-old man collapsed at the One Big New Year’s Eve event at the O2 Academy in the Percy Gee building on the Leicester University campus.

    About 400 additional nurses are needed to plug a shortage in Leicester's three hospitals, according to a senior nurse.

    The nursing vacancy rate is just under 10% at the hospitals, which means temporary staff are being employed to meet targets and some nurses are working extra shifts.

    Maria McAuley, assistant chief nurse, said: "If you think of how many wards we have, it feels we are short of a lot of nurses but in comparison to other NHS organisations it is not.

    "Obviously we would like to have no vacancies whatsoever in Leicester hospitals hence why we are doing the recruitment day next weekend on 13 January."

    A man used a crowbar to threaten staff before taking cigarettes during a robbery at a post office.

    Singer Sam Bailey said she is "determined" to get back on the pantomime stage after being knocked out by a loft ladder at her home.

    The 40-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance with concussion after she was injured retrieving a suitcase on Tuesday.

    Martin Ballard, a BBC Radio Leicester presenter and the dame in the pantomime, said the cast were "shocked" to hear the news.

    He said: "Sam's singing is irreplaceable and she drives the whole story.

    "We are all missing Sam and would love to have her back, but we also don't want her to rush back too early."

    Remember the furore around the city council's decision to place an extensive cordon around Derby's Market Place Christmas tree in November?

    The barrier prompted much ridicule and was soon scaled down after the authority concluded its approach had been "over cautious".

    Today, in response to a Freedom of Information request, the authority has published the risk assessment it carried out before putting the original cordon in place.

    The assessment had concluded the 35ft tree posed a "likely risk" of "multiple major injury or fatality" if it fell over and such an event would "potentially leave the authority exposed to criticism".

    A chief executive from a Nottingham art charity has written an open letter raising concerns about help for the homeless.

    Dr Nick Owen from the Mighty Creatives said he tried to find accommodation for a man on Boxing Day but was turned away repeatedly.

    It comes despite claims from Nottingham City Council that "no-one need sleep rough in Nottingham this winter".

    Dr Owen said: "You would like to think there might be spaces somewhere... to get into a room for a couple of hours to sleep and get a cup of tea... wandering the streets isn't an answer."

    Nottingham City Council said it can't comment on individual cases but help and support is offered to everyone sleeping rough, but some reject it or are thrown out of shelters for violence or substance misuse.

    A planning committee will today decide whether or not to give Leicestershire Police permission to build a new storage building at its headquarters.

    If approved, the proposals would see police equipment and archive material from across the county stored at a single site in Enderby.

    Leicestershire County Council says it will address the concerns of independent shops in Loughborough who say they've been struggling financially since the town centre was pedestrianised.

    Some businesses say they haven't recovered since the new measures were introduced.

    A charity which works with vulnerable women in Derby, says public support has helped save it from closure.

    Derby Women's Centre had to make all of its staff redundant earlier this year due to a funding shortage.

    The latest winter situation report from the trust that runs the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital shows bed occupancy rose to 92.3% at new year - the recommended 'safe' limit is 85%.

    The national average for the week leading up to New Year's Eve was 91.7%.
