    Hugh Casswell
    Reporter BBC Radio Nottingham

Plans to scrap full-time firefighters working overnight at Ashfield and Retford stations have been approved.

The money-saving move will see on-call retained firefighters cover the shift instead.

The decision was made by the Nottinghamshire Fire Authority at a meeting this afternoon.

    The meeting

The proposal had been opposed by campaigners and some politicians including John Mann, MP for Bassetlaw and Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero.

The leader of the Ashfield Independents, Jason Zadrozny was also against the plans.

It will save each station an estimated £500,000 each year.

She said: “I have no idea how long he’d been there but in this weather it's amazing that he was still alive... he must have been terrified."

  3. Ant study could help tackle antibiotics crisispublished at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    Maryam Qaiser
    BBC News

Scientists at the University of Leicester are studying ants to try to find a solution to the "antibiotics crisis".

New guidelines advise doctors not to prescribe "precious" antibiotics for most people with sore throats and instead recommend giving them drugs like paracetamol.

Health bosses say because of overuse, the medication is now useless against certain strains of serious bacterial infections.

The scientists are looking at how species like ants have evolved and found ways to defend themselves.

Charlie Durant, a PhD student at the university, said: "They (ants) are always crawling all over each other and they are going out into the world to find food, which is contaminated with all sorts of horrible micros, which could potentially infect them.

"They are then bringing it back into their home, which is a warm, moist environment."
