    Pop singer and winner of Strictly Come Dancing Jay McGuiness was among the guests at a charity ball in his hometown Newark.

    More than £16,000 was raised at the fifth Sam White Legacy ball, which raises funds for the Queen's Medical Centre.

    The money also pays for respite breaks for families with children who have cancer.

    The annual ball is held in memory of Sam White (pictured) who died from an infection in 2013 aged 16, after battling with a brain tumour for more than three years.

    Since his death, parents Pam and Mike, from Newark, have raised thousands of pounds to help other children with similar conditions.

    More than 30 local sporting heroes attended the gala at the Newark Showground on Saturday which also saw live music, games, a disco and an auction.

    Pam said: “Sam would be so proud to see how many people support his hopes for the future to help young people with a brain tumour.”

    A 46-year-old man from Long Eaton who stabbed and killed his neighbour has been jailed for life with a minimum of 15 years.

    Nigel McGurk, 63, was found with fatal stab wounds and died at the scene at West Park Court, on Broad Street, last August.

    Jeffery Beers, who lives in the same building block, was convicted of murder at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday.

    Det Insp Steve Shaw, of Derbyshire Police, said the men were friends, but people described their relationship as "futile".

    He said: "This was a sad and tragic end to a life."

    Motorists in Derbyshire are being warned to take care after this car overturned in Ambergate.

    The force said the driver escaped without injury following the crash on the A610 in Ambergate.

    One lane remains shut while the vehicle is recovered.

    A former circus ringmaster has hit out at government plans to ban travelling circuses from using animals.

    Currently, 19 animals including zebra, a macaw, camels, a fox, raccoons, and reindeer are currently being used by circuses on the road.

    Kevin Baines, from Derbyshire, said that it "will be a shame" to see them banned completely.

    He continued: "The animals were treated better than we were, ate before us, they were looked after and bedded down for the night before we were...are they going to ban zoo's because they have animals too?"

    The pledge to ban wild animals has been welcomed by Animal Defenders International.

    President Jan Creamer said: “Circuses cannot meet the needs of animals in small, mobile accommodation and we've repeatedly documented suffering and abuse...we congratulate the UK government on consigning this outdated act to the past where it belongs.”

    Women under the age of 75 in Newark and Sherwood are most likely to die from breast cancer in England, according to a new report.

    The report released by an all-party parliamentary group showed Rushcliffe had the highest number of early detections in the country, with 88% of breast cancers found at stage one or stage two.

    It also found the East Midlands had some “worrying gaps” in its breast screening workforce and some of the longest waits to see a specialist compared to other regions.

    MPs are now calling on the government to address the matter.

    Derbyshire police are asking for help to identify the people in some christening photos on a camera that was found in a Derby street.

    The camera was handed in last week after being discovered on Howe Street on Monday 19 February.

    Illegal gas works taking place in Nottingham are putting people at risk, according to research by the UK's official gas registration body.

    Gas Safe Register has rated Nottingham as the worst city in the country outside of London with 72% of illegal gas work found to be unsafe.

    The risks posed to people in the event of an unqualified engineer tampering with gas include carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.

    The organisation is urging people to check their engineer is on the Gas Safe Register, to ensure they are legally qualified to work in your home.

    A Nottingham radio station has been fined £2,000 after playing music which "glorified historic battlefield victories" against non-Muslims, Ofcom said.

    The watchdog said the track broke the rules, external as it suggested that "similar acts committed now would bring honour to Islam".

    Owners Karimia Limited said they were "extremely embarrassed by what happened" and "did not agree with the content" as it "went against their aims to build trust among communities".

    Despite making the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix last week the world number one was critical of his "poor" performances.

    For most people, running a marathon is a daunting challenge but a Lincolnshire farmer has decided to go a step further.

    Craig Williamson, who farms near Gainsborough, decided to make a three-quarter scale costume version of his own tractor to run the London Marathon in.

    He says he wanted his costume "to be a bit shocking" to raise as much awareness of his chosen charity, The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

    Last time he ran the marathon - without a costume - he raised £5,074.89 for the helicopter, he's hoping to beat that target this year.

    A new support group for transgender adults launches tomorrow at Leicester's LGBT Centre.

    The Living Out Loud Project has been developed to support adults who identify as transgender or who are questioning their gender identity. It will also give families and relatives information, guidance and help.

    A collection of "distinctive jewellery" has been stolen from a home in Darley Abbey.

    Officers say the offender forced their way through the front door and took a gold cross necklace with coloured diamonds, a white gold curb-chain necklace, a bracelet and a gold emerald ring.

    Derbyshire Police said cash was also stolen.

    It happened between 18:00 on 17 February and 09:00 on 19 February in Belper Road.

  20. M1 crash deaths: Driver in fatal crash on hands-free callpublished at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

    The trial of a driver who crashed into a minibus killing eight people continues today.

    Yesterday, Reading Crown Court heard David Wagstaff, 54, had been on an hour-long hands-free call when the crash on the M1 near Milton Keynes happened in August.

    The jury was told that when Mr Wagstaff hit the minibus, which was taking passengers from Nottingham to London, he forced the vehicle into and under a lorry being driven by Ryszard Masierak.

    Minibus driver Cyriac Joseph - who was killed in the crash - was waiting with his hazard lights on for the chance to pass Mr Masierak who had allegedly stopped on the M1 near Newport Pagnell.

    Both Mr Masierak, of Stoke-on-Trent, and Mr Masierak, of Evesham, deny causing death by dangerous driving, and four counts each of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

    Mr Masierak faces a further eight charges of causing death by careless driving, while over the prescribed alcohol limit.
