    Sophie Charles from Thurmaston contracted sepsis in July of last year.

    She began to feel unwell, her mum Julie called NHS helpline 111, then a paramedic was sent out to Sophie.

    The paramedic spotted the symptoms straight away, and Sophie was taken to hospital.

    Almost 400 dispersal orders have been handed to people taking illegal psychoactive drugs like Black Mamba and Spice in Derby city centre.

    The police, city council and public health officials have been working on a project to deal with the issues caused by the drug users since last summer.

    It has also helped 21 people onto a drug treatment programme.

    Nottinghamshire Police said it has received "no information" indicating an attack on engineering student Mariam Moustafa was a hate crime.

    The 18-year-old died three weeks after being assaulted outside the Intu Victoria centre in Nottingham.

    A 17-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and released on bail.

    A spokesman for the police said officers are "working hard to establish the circumstances" around the incident, and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

    The British motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield has opened a state-of-the-art research and development facility in the East Midlands, employing more than 120 people.

    Its move to the new high-tech centre near Lutterworth takes the total number of motorcycle-makers in Leicestershire to three, which industry insiders say is great news for the region.

    One hundred jobs are being cut at a college, due to changes in the way apprenticeships are funded.

    Vision West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield says it has to make savings of £2.7m.

    Since last May private training contractors can get direct funding from the government to provide apprenticeships.

    It means the college no longer retains 20% of that funding.

    The redundancies will be in place by June.

    Pictures have emerged of the 18-year-old who died three weeks after being attacked outside the Victoria Centre.

    Mariam Moustafa, an engineering student at Nottingham College, was beaten before she boarded a bus in Parliament Street on 20 February.

    She was taken to hospital and was placed into an induced coma but died on Wednesday.

    Derbyshire director of cricket Kim Barnett has said he will be using his contacts book to find a replacement for Mitchell Santner.

    The New Zealand international has had his move to the county cancelled after it emerged he is due to be out for between six to nine months with a knee injury.

    Figures out this morning show that the number of penalties issued to Leicester parents for unauthorised school absences has fallen 11% in the past three years.

    In Leicestershire, the number of fines fell by seven percent in the same period and in Rutland, the number actually rose from 61 fines to 80.

    Leicester City Council is still one of the strictest authorities in England and Wales, issuing four times more penalties than the average.

    Over 2,000 fines were handed to parents across Derbyshire for truancy and taking their children out of school for holidays during term time.

    A BBC investiagtion found that for the 2016-17 academic year, 2,294 fines were handed out across the county.

    Local authorities act on behalf of schools in issuing penalties, which start at £60 and then rise to £120 if not paid within three weeks.

    Police have released CCTV footage of three men they're looking for after an attempted burglary in Mickleover.

    They were caught on camera walking down the driveway of a house on Station Road at about 02:10 on 9 March.

    The owners of the house saw a hole had been cut out of their garage door when they woke up later that morning.

    Officers believe it may be linked to a break-in at Littleover in January.

    Police have arrested two men on suspicion of aggravated burglary, following a crash on Ridgeway Walk in Top Valley.

    A police officer was taken to hospital with injuries and a police dog was also injured.

    Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

    Recent snowfall, resulting in flight cancellations, has been blamed for the fall in passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport.

    More than 218,000 people used the airport in February, a fall of nearly 6.5% compared with last year.

    Airport bosses have said they are now concentrating on the summer with new routes to Spain and Turkey being offered for the first time.

    Two men have been arrested after nearly 200 cannabis plants were found growing in the loft of a house in Ilkeston.

    Two men, aged 21 and 17, were detained by officers last weekend following a search of a property on Springfield Gardens.

    The pair appeared in court charged with the production of a controlled drug and were remanded into secure custody and accommodation.

    They are now due to appear before Derby Crown Court next month.

    A full Victorian carousel is set to go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall next month.

    Made in Burton in 1895, the ride features individually-carved peacocks and ponies, and last made an appearance at Nottingham's famous fair in 1979.

    It's expected to fetch £100,000, though, so you may need a whip-round to take home this merry-go-round.

    Nottingham College has paid tribute to one of its students who has died, three weeks after being attacked outside the Victoria Centre.

    Mariam Moustafa, 18, was attacked before she boarded a bus in Parliament Street on 20 February.

    Yultan Mellor, a vice principal at the college, said: "Everyone at the college is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Mariam Moustafa.

    "Our thoughts and condolences are with her parents and family at this difficult time. We will do anything we can to support the family.

    "Mariam was a well-liked and able engineering student at our Highfields campus with strong aspirations for her future studies and eventual career.

    "Mariam was a keen student, who worked hard in both theory and practical sessions and was doing very well on her course."

    A county councillor has branded parents who take their children out of school for holidays during term time as "selfish and irresponsible".

    Across Nottinghamshire, 3,771 fines were issued to parents for the 2016-17 academic year for term time holidays.

    Councillor Philip Owen, who represents Nuthall and Kimberley, said: "I think that parents who take children out of school during term time, by and large... are simply selfish and irresponsible.

    "I think it is irresponsible to interrupt the education of your child and I think it is very selfish because when that child gets back to school they expect teachers to make up the time that is lost.

    "That can only be at the expense of other children in the class."
