A clean air zone in Nottingham could be brought in by this time next year but may not include charges, it has been revealed.

The scheme aims to deter the most-polluting vehicles, including diesel-powered taxis, buses and HGVs, from entering the city in a bid to curb nitrogen dioxide levels.

Most diesel vehicles built after 2015 adhere to the standards and the clean air zone would not apply to cars.

Authorities can also give electric vehicles preferential treatment by allowing them to bypass one-way systems, priority parking spaces and lower charges.

Nottingham City Council is currently involved in modelling work which will determine exactly where the zone will be applied, and whether there will be a charge for polluting vehicles.

However, if the authority does decide to introduce a charge, they would not be able to use it to raise additional revenue, the government has said.

Full details of the scheme are expected to be announced in June, before a public consultation.

Once approved by the government, it could come into effect in early 2019.
