    An academic from Loughborough University said he has become the youngest Brit to cross the world's largest frozen lake on foot.

    Dr Ash Routen walked for 8 to 12 hours a day and experienced temperatures as low as -35C during his Lake Baikal expedition, in Russia, external.

    Dr Routen and friend Phil Sturgeon completed the 634km walk – which is equivalent to walking from London to Edinburgh or doing 15 back-to-back marathons – in 19 days.

    Dr Routen said: “We had a truly amazing experience. The scale, extremes of weather, and creaking and groaning of the ice on Lake Baikal were mind-blowing.

    “It's an extremely beautiful place, and the Siberian people were so welcoming and supportive. It was difficult and humbling, and we now know a lot more about ourselves and our own capabilities."

    The Bishop of Leicester will help deliver the funeral service for a mother and her two sons who lost their lives in the Hinckley Road explosion, in Leicester.

    The Right Reverend Martyn Snow is one of two people who will present a 90-minute public service for Mary Ragoobar, 46, and her sons Shane, 18, and Sean, 17, at Leicester Cathedral on Friday.

    The Reverend David Hind of the family's church, Leicester's Trinity Life, will also deliver the service.

    Claire Lomas has finished the Manchester Marathon.

    It has taken Claire, who is paralysed from the chest down, eight days to complete the 26 miles.

    Claire, of Eye Kettleby, near Melton Mowbray, has raised more than £29,000 for The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, which is a UK charity dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.

    Plans for a giant sculpture of a Lancaster bomber by the side of the A46 between Newark and Lincoln are due to be approved next week.

    North Kesteven District Council's planning sub-committee has been given a recommendation to approve proposals for the full-size art installation on land at Brills Farm just off the A46 in Norton Disney, in Lincolnshire.

    The Bomber County Gateway Trust is hoping to bring the project to fruition this year - the 100th anniversary of the RAF.

    The 85ft (26m) structure would be mounted on a steel frame to give the impression that it is in flight.

    Not sure how Leicester suffragette Alice Hawkins would feel about being behind bars again.

    Temporary fencing has been put up around the statue, unveiled earlier this year, due to the ongoing refurbishment of Leicester Market.

    Ms Hawkins was jailed five times for her role leading the Suffragette campaign in Leicester in the early 20th Century.

    A Frankie Valli tribute singer jailed for sexually abusing children has had 12 years added to his prison term after admitting further charges.

    Robin Maughan, 36, of Market Harborough, Leicestershire, has been serving 14 years and 10 months for several child sex offences.

    He has since been convicted of 17 further charges including indecent assault on girls and sexual activity with boys.

    Maughan, of Western Avenue, was handed an additional 12-year jail sentence on Friday for one count of indecent assault on a girl, which will run after his current sentence ends.

    The sentence for the other 16 offences will run along side Maughan's existing prison term.

    Det Con Rob Waddington said: "Maughan is a dangerous man, who befriended and then subjected young teenagers to sexual abuse over a number of months - and sometimes years - leaving them confused and afraid to report what was happening to them."

    A Leicestershire paramedic who was verbally abused after stopping to get food while on a 10-hour shift has thanked the public for the "amazing" support he has received since mentioning the incident on Twitter.

    Tim Hargraves said while the criticism had come from just one individual, many more people had been in touch to express their appreciation for the work ambulance teams do.

    He told the BBC: "The support has been amazing. It's really great to see the majority appreciate our role and have an understanding of the pressures we face."
