    The first intake of pupils have arrived at the new Derby Cathedral School today.

    The school has opened with 180 Year 7 pupils who will be based in temporary accommodation near to the railway station and will have a strong emphasis on music and maths.

    Headteacher Gordon Inglis said their aim was teach all pupils how to play a musical instrument, they will have an in-house student council and will offer students opportunities to develop leadership and social skills.

    Thousands of people lined the streets of Nottinghamshire on Saturday to see cyclists taking part in the seventh stage of the Tour of Britain.

    The group started at Central Avenue in West Bridgford and then made their way through several Nottinghamshire towns and villages and finished in Chesterfield Road, Mansfield.

    County council leader Kay Cutts said the TV coverage of the tour might encourage more people to visit.

    She added: "I think we have benefited from this, the riders like to come here, we have the most beautiful countryside and lots of tourist places for people to come."

    Motorists have been told to avoid the area.

  5. Thousands join Vicky McClure on charity walkpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 10 September 2018

    More than 3,000 people joined Vicky McClure in Nottingham’s Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.

    The Line of Duty star, who is an ambassador for the charity, took a break from filming in Belfast to cut the ribbon on the walk with Daniel Bradbury, who was diagnosed with dementia aged just 30.

    Vicky said: "This is my eighth successive Memory Walk in a row and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. When I did my first one, there were just 300 of us on the banks of the River Trent and now there are 3,000 here."

    Daniel, who has a rare form of inherited dementia, completed the walk with his wife, Jordan and their twins.

    Jordan said: “We wanted to take part and walk for people with dementia past, present and future to raise awareness and money for vital research. If we make a stand together, we can find that cure."

    Police said the A50 eastbound near Foston is closed this morning after a lorry hit a bridge.

    A spokesman said they were called to the crash at about 07:20 which was close to the turn off for the A5111 to Burton upon Trent. He said the lorry was carrying carpet.

    The driver is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

    Police said about half an hour later police were called to a crash between two vehicles on the westbound carriageway but that has now been cleared.

    Derbyshire Police said the A50 near Foston is shut heading east because of an overturned lorry which has shed its load.

    Officers said recovery work is in progress and there is no indication yet of how long the road will be shut so they have told motorists to avoid the area.

    There are no details yet of any injuries.

    A Leicester woman has said she's "living in fear" after her house windows and car windscreen were shattered in what she says was a 'random attack'.

    Beverley Issacs from Rowley Fields told BBC Radio Leicester the attack took place last Sunday afternoon when her three children were at home, and is angry police didn't come out to investigate until Friday.

    She said she has been carrying out her own detective work speaking to neighbours and has "no idea" who could have done it.

    "The people that have trashed my house get away with doing what they have done," she said.

    "I'm not going to work, I don't sleep, I'm constantly on the lookout," Ms Issacs added.

    "You're paying for the service, my council tax hasn't gone down, and I'm expecting the service that they're [the police] going to come out to see me and make sure me and my children are OK, but they say they don't do that kind of thing."

    Leicestershire Police said it is investigating and officers are now reviewing CCTV provided by the family.

    A decision will be made this week about whether millions of pounds of government funding, which was intended to build a replacement for the Assembly Rooms in Derby, can be used to refurbish the building instead.

    The new plans were put forward by Conservatives who took over the city council from Labour in May.

    They want to drop Labour's plans for a new building and fix the old one instead and are asking for the Local Enterprise Partnership's approval first.

    On the off chance you missed this bit of good news at the weekend, Harry Maguire has signed a new five-year deal with Leicester City.

    The England defender had been linked with a move to Manchester United but the Foxes said they would resists all attempts at a move.

    "Ever since I came to this club, I've always reiterated how good they've been to me," Maguire said.

    The centre-back played every match last season and has appeared in all four of Leicester's league games so far this season.

    A baby born with her heart outside her body is due to go home.

    Vanellope Hope Wilkins, who was born last year, had three operations at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital to put her heart inside her chest.

    She's spent the last few months in hospital in Nottingham but is now preparing to go home permanently.

    Two men who were arrested over a crash in the early hours of yesterday have been released under investigation.

    They had been the drivers of two cars which collided at the junction of Friar Gate and Stafford Street in Derby, at about 01:10 on Sunday.

    An 18-year-old woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the QMC.

    She remains in a critical condition.

    Trent Barton buses says it is running a full service so far this morning despite strike action by 160 drivers.

    Those working under Bartons Buses contracts are involved in the walk-out after they rejected a 2.5% pay rise.

    The company says its drivers earn significantly more than the living wage but the Unite union said there could be further industrial action over the next four weeks if there are no agreements.
