    The ambulance service has confirmed it has been called to assist police dealing with an "armed person" in Arnold.

    EMAS said it dispatched a paramedic in a fast response car and its Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene at about 12:45.

    There is a large cordoned off area around a block of flats off Brook Avenue, Arnold, and the police helicopter has been reportedly hovering over the houses.

    A section of Coppice Road, at the junction with Rolleston Drive, is also closed with vehicles being diverted.

    Police said they were called at 12:15 and have told people to avoid the area.

    Police have confirmed there are armed officers in Arnold after a report of a person being armed with a weapon at a block of flats.

    Jacobs Court has been evacuated "as a precautionary measure". Police are advising members of the public to avoid the area for the time being.

    A cordon is in place and police have said: "We like to reassure people that we do not believe there’s any risk to the wider public."

    An exhibition on Coalville’s Memorial Clock Tower has opened in the town.

    North West Leicestershire District Council has said it includes memories of the tower's unveiling by local philanthropist, Mary Booth in 1926 as well as its "ongoing significance" in the town.

    The exhibition is called "These Names are Lamps of Sacrifice" and has involved local heritage groups and the local community. It also looks at other types of memorials in the town's churches, graveyards and public places.

    It's currently on display at Christ Church Hall in Coalville but will visit other venues in Coalville, Hugglescote, Whitwick, Ibstock, Swannington and Thringstone between September and November.

    Police officers failed to properly investigate complaints a young woman made against her former boyfriend in the days before he brutally murdered her, the police watchdog has found.

    Alice Ruggles, 24, who grew up in Leicestershire, died after Trimaan Dhillon broke into her Gateshead flat and cut her throat in October 2016

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said two officers from Northumbria Police had cases of misconduct to answer while another performed unsatisfactorily, after the force treated the matter as harassment rather than stalking.

    Dhillon, 26, who was a serving soldier, was jailed for a minimum of 22 years after being convicted of murder in April last year.

    A mum from Leicester has started an epic journey to help raise money for a woman who needs treatment for a rare cancer.

    Sue Bishop, from Stoneygate, set off along London Road this morning to walk 225km (140 miles) up to Lancashire.

    She's doing the walk to raise money for her son's girlfriend Amanda, from Lancaster, who was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer in March.

    The families are now trying to raise £100,000 to pay for Amanda to have immunotherapy which is not available under the NHS.

    Sue is meeting up with Amanda's mum, Pat Sackville-Wiggins at Bilsborrow near Preston on Monday. .

    Praising Sue's son Sam for the support he's shown, Pat told Radio Leicester: "They are going through a tough time but with all our help I know it will see them through it."

    One Nottingham mechanic had a tricky rescue when he discovered a kitten trapped under the bonnet of a car during an MOT test.

    The car had been taken to a garage in Bulwell last Friday when Phil Hardy made the discovery.

    It's believed the stray kitten had crawled under the car as the driver set off, and was lucky to be unhurt after getting stuck near the engine belts.

    RSPCA Inspector Kristy Ludlam said: “She was well and truly stuck and was scared so she didn’t want to move."

    The following day another similar looking stray kitten was found lost in Bulwell, which led officers to believe they were sisters.

    The kittens, who are roughly five weeks old are now being cared for the RSPCA until they find a new home.

    A crash which left a tram out of action for at least a month was caused by a lorry turning into the path of an incoming tram, a meeting has heard.

    The accident happened on 7 August as the tram was leaving a stop near Phoenix Park on Millennium Way West in Nottingham and the HGV failed to give way, turning left in front of the passage of the tram.

    The tram driver was taken to the QMC hospital with minor injuries. One young passenger was reportedly left "shaken up" by the crash but there were no other injuries.

    NET said it is now putting new signs up to prevent another accident and warn "left turners to be aware of the trams".

    Trevor Stocker, operations manager for NET, told the meeting it was a "rare" but serious accident and added: "The tram is still out of operation because of the damage, and it's likely to be still a couple of weeks before we get that back, because there was a very serious impact."

    Alfreton Road in Derby will not reopen for several more weeks more than a month after it was shut by a burst water main.

    It was closed on 9 August after several roads in the area were submerged under water and a bridge over the railway was left severely damaged.

    Derby City Council said it has started repairs to the road, but it's not yet been given access to the Grade Two listed bridge because railway tracks are being relaid in the city.

    The proposals include a five star hotel, offices and student accommodation on the 40 acre site and are on public display at the Urban Rooms on Carrington Street today.

    The developers said they understand it is the biggest regeneration project in the UK outside London.

    Christopher Ware, director of Conygar Investment said: "We believe this project will take about 10 years to complete and... suspect it will cost several hundred million pounds to build.

    "The city is lacking grade a office space, it is lacking a high end hotel and there is a shortage of housing which we believe we can solve on this site."

    A man who drove the wrong way down the M1 after a fatal crash has admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

    Adrian Radu, 28, a Romanian national living in Nottingham, was seen driving erratically on the motorway on 24 March.

    He was near junction 27 when he braked suddenly. He tried to perform a u-turn when he crashed into a van killing passenger 48-year-old Mark Downham from Chorley Lancashire.

    Radu then fled, driving north up the southbound carriageway, and failed a roadside breath test when he was stopped.

    He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and other motoring offences.

    He will be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court tomorrow.
