  3. 'Deplorable' doctor put patients at riskpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

A "deplorable" doctor put patients at risk by not recommending appropriate tests and failing to check and keep medical records.

A medical tribunal found that Leicester GP Dr Kevin Newley, who ran The Maples Surgery, in Evington Road, provided poor care to patients resulting in his fitness to practise being impaired.

A report by the Medical Practioners Tribunal Service identified a large number of findings of misconduct that it said can cumulatively be regarded as serious misconduct relating to patients treated by Dr Newley between 2006 and 2014.

The allegations related to seven different patients and involved matters of "fundamental importance" including history taking, record keeping and communication with patients. In the case of one patient, Dr Newley did not make contact asking him to attend the surgery after test results indicated more investigation was required.

One example of inappropriate communication in a consultation that was given came from a patient's evidence who said that Dr Newley had asked him: "If it's positive what are you going to do about your great big prostate? Have it chopped out?"

The tribunal will meet again in January to consider whether it is necessary to impose a sanction on Mr Newley, who retired in 2016, external, but remains on the GP Register with conditions applied by the General Medical Council governing any future work.

A consultation starts today into plans to scrap Nottinghamshire's district and borough councils.

The county council has proposed the changes to form one unitary authority to make savings, with leader Kay Cutts saying there will be cuts to services if the plans don't go ahead.

Conservative Ms Cutts said: Rather than asking people to spend more money on a system which is probably past its best, we should go back and ask what is it we’re trying to deliver for people.

“After all, they’re paying for it."

    Nottinghamshire County Council

But the plans have been opposed by district councils. Jason Zadrozny, Independent leader of Ashfield District Council, said: "My massive fear for my district is that it will just be a remote outpost, services will be diluted and we are the forgotten area of Nottinghamshire."
