More than 50 campaigners are protesting about plans for a new east-west link road in Leicester.
The road would go between Aylestone Road and Narborough Road, cutting through Aylestone Meadows.
Sixteen local groups object to the idea and have been showing their feelings outside the town hall where the plans are being discussed in a full city council meeting. The meeting had to take place after a a petition reached more than 1,500 signatures.
Leicester City Council said the link road would help address congestion and improve the city's air quality. At the moment there is no funding in place for the new road and if the proposal were to be brought forward, it would be subject to detailed consultation.

England boss Gareth Southgate has been explaining his reasons for including Derby County's on-loan Mason Mount and Leicester City's James Maddison in his 25-man squad for games against Croatia and Spain.
He told a news conference: "I think this aligns with what we've done in the last 18 months.
"We've got a few injuries in the midfield in particular - Dele [Alli], Jesse [Lingard] and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] have been missing, and Fabian Delph, so there is an opportunity there.
"We think there are some exciting young players that we've been tracking, either through their clubs or junior teams. This is a great opportunity to look at them."

Two children from the same family in Leicestershire have died as a result of a rare complication of E. coli, known as hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), that causes the kidneys to shut down.
Public Health England have confirmed the children, from the Charnwood area, died in hospital where they were being treated during the last two weeks. The cases are not being treated as an outbreak.
There is now a focus on the family’s recent movements and an investigation is under way involving Public Health England, Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council and NHS partners.
Dr Lauren Ahyow, from Public Health England in the East Midlands, said: “E. coli is an infection that causes a spectrum of illness ranging from mild through to severe bloody diarrhoea, mostly without fever.
"Young children and elderly people are more prone to development of complications associated with E. coli.
“E.coli can be acquired through a number of routes including contaminated food, contact with farm animals and infected water."

A woman has gone on trial charged with the murder of her boyfriend Christopher Pearson in Hucknall, Nottingham, after she found him naked in a hot tub with a group of men and women.
Nottingham Crown Court today heard how Demi Harris stabbed 39-year-old Mr Pearson "in a rage" on 18 February during a party at their house in Strathmore Close.
He suffered a stab wound to his abdomen and died in hospital.
Miss Harris, 21, denies murder and claims she was acting in self-defence.
The jury heard the couple were rowing. A witness saw Mr Pearson lying on the floor with a wound.
She described Miss Harris as "distressed" saying: "What have I done? I've gone too far this time."
Michael Auty QC, prosecuting, said Miss Harris claimed to have only "jabbed" her boyfriend to stop him attacking her, yet he said she didn't have a mark or bruise on her.
The trial continues.
