    A 16-year-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital following a crash in Southwell last night.

    The boy was hit by a car in Nottingham Road at about 21:00.

    It happened near Nottingham Trent University's Brackenhurst Campus.

    The boy suffered serious injuries and was taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre.

    Plans to build a 70-bed care home on the old Market Harborough Hospital site have been unanimously approved.

    Councillors voted in favour of the plans but insisted strict conditions were put in place to ensure the building's Grade II-listed portico is protected during the work and retained as part of the new building.

    The former hospital in Coventry Road, also known as the Cottage Hospital, was sold to Sterling Rose Care by NHS Property Services for £1.35m.

    All but the protected portico will be demolished and a new care home built in its place.

    The portico and plaques featuring the names of the 1,655 Harborough soldiers who served in World War One will form part of the new building.

    Keenan Savage was reported missing from St Ann's on Tuesday.

    He is 6ft 3ins tall with short, dark blonde hair and was last seen wearing a black puffa style coat, white Nike t-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms.

    A new study is offering patients in the East Midlands a drug to reduce the risk of getting a blood clot after having a stroke during their sleep.

    Up until now the drug - alteplase - has only been available to those who have a stroke when they're awake.

    This is because it has to be taken within four-and-a-half hours of the stroke.

    It's now thought that people who have a stroke in their sleep, have it just before waking up and therefore the medication would be safe and potentially beneficial.

    The British Heart Foundation is paying for the study and is recruiting for the three-year study from hospitals in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.

    It's hoped that the study will see a reduction in death and disability among those 20% of stroke victims.

    Work will begin next month in retrofitting sprinklers to tower blocks in Leicester following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

    Maxfield House, an 18-storey block on the St Peter’s estate in Highfields, will be the first Leicester City Council block to see a sprinkler system fitted, at a cost of £450,000.

    There are plans to fit Gordon House, Clipstone House and Framland House on the St Peter’s estate, and St Leonard’s Court in Clarendon Park with similar systems, pending funding approval.

    Goscote House – Leicester’s tallest tower block at 23 storeys – is proposed to be decommissioned and demolished due to structural issues.

    Alex Hughes has signed a contract extension, external to stay at Derbyshire until the end of the 2021 season.

    The 27-year-old academy graduate featured in every match this season, scoring 918 runs and taking 32 wickets.

    Derbyshire's head of cricket, Dave Houghton, said: "He's a player we can build a team around for years to come."

    A witness speaking at the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in Nottinghamshire has given a horrific account of how she was routinely raped in her foster home.

    She was so scared that she ran away and slept rough.

    The witness was moved to Beechwood children’s home, where she reported her attacker but staff still allowed him to make visits to the home, and his assaults continued there.

    Police and community wardens from Loughborough University have been out on the streets to give safety advice and good neighbour tips to students - using packs of pasta handed out for free.

    They've put stickers on the packets - donated by a supermarket - to introduce the local beat team to those living in student areas.

    Sgt James Thomas, from Leicestershire Police, said: "Instead of bombarding students with hundreds of leaflets, which I'm sure they already get from the fairs they go to, we thought we'd give them something physical.

    "Every time they open the cupboard they're going to see my hairy face and hopefully they'll remember some of the messages we're trying to push."

    A man who strangled and repeatedly kicked a woman in the face before threatening her with a knife in a "horrific" domestic abuse case has been jailed.

    Ben Rowland, 28, was sentenced to a four-year prison term with one on licence following a "catalogue of abuse" over several months.

    His behaviour was exposed by neighbours who saw the victim fleeing a house in East Leake on 15 July.

    Rowland, of Thorpe Road, Shepshed, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behaviour towards a woman within a domestic relationship.

    He was also charged with two counts of actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating and theft to which he pleaded not guilty, but were subsequently dropped.

    He was also given a restraining order, preventing him from contacting the victim.

    Det Con Chris Taylor said Rowland was, "remorseless and arrogant" in custody.

    “Abusers like Rowland will look to systematically isolate women from their support networks, but thankfully this young woman’s family and friends immediately returned to support and protect her," he said.

    A 22-year-old man from Leicester has been charged with terrorism offences after allegedly preparing for terrorist acts.

    Hanzalah Patel, of Frederick Road, was charged alongside Safwaan Mansur, 22, of Hampton Road, Aston, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism between 31 May 2017 and 24 June 2017 and engaging in conduct to prepare to travel to Syria contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

    The pair are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

    A councillor who called for Theresa May to be hanged "for treason" on Facebook has been sentenced.

    Richard Alderman, 72, of Lonsdale Way, Oakham, pleaded guilty to sending a menacing or grossly offensive message via the public communication network at Birmingham Magistrates' Court last week.

    The Rutland county councillor was handed a six-month community order with a six-month curfew at the same court today.

    He has faced calls to resign his position by Sir Alan Duncan, MP for Rutland and Melton.

    Rutland County Council said his actions were "totally unacceptable" and will be the subject of a further investigation by the authority's standards committee.
