A plastic tub containing 35 mice - including babies and pregnant mums - has been found dumped by the side of the road in Sutton-in Ashfield.
The RSPCA said the package was discovered by a dog walker in Hardwick Lane on Tuesday.
Inspector Kristy Ludlam said she believed there were three generations of mice cramped inside the small container, including ten babies and some that were only a day old.
She said: "I suspect someone had these mice as pets and as they bred they decided they couldn’t cope. But instead of seeking help they dumped them at the side of a road which is so callous as they could have easily have suffered a lingering death.”
Thankfully all the mice have survived and are now being put up for adoption.

A man has been jailed for 10 years after admitting beating his flatmate and then setting him on fire, police said.
Officers said Kevin Stanley, 48, set upon his victim on 31 May at the home they shared in Cinderhill Walk, Bulwell.
He then rang police to say he had attacked someone which could result in an attempted murder charge.
Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and found the victim lying on the floor severely beaten with wounds consistent to being stamped on and with burns to his arms, chest and face.
Stanley admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court and on Friday he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with an extended licence of three years.
The listed structure will cost £700,000 to repair and has been closed for three months.

An amateur astronomer has sent us this fascinating video showing a meteor exploding in a fireball in the skies above Loughborough.
Derek Robson told us the video was captured from his garden in the early hours of Saturday.
Dr Robert Massey, deputy executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society, confirmed the footage appeared to show a genuine fireball.
He said they occurred in the UK a number of times each year but they were difficult to predict so witnessing one or capturing it on camera came down to being in the right place at the right time.

Two months after a county council axed plans to review the school crossing patrol service to save money, £60,000 has been trimmed from its budget.
Derbyshire County Council withdrew a proposal to review the service - and its 108 staff - to save £300,000.
It had asked schools and town and parish councils whether they would be able to pay £4,000 a year each to keep their lollipop men and women but very few said they could.
Now, council papers for the cabinet member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure say that £60,000 has been cut from the school crossing patrol service.
In a statement, the authority said the "budget has been underspent" over the last few years which is why it can make the cuts with no affects on the service.

Almost 130 newborn babies have been taken into the care of local authorities in Derbyshire through court orders over the past decade.
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that for the 10-year period from 2007, a total of 128 babies, were the subjects of Section 31 care proceedings, all within a week of their birth.
These allow a court to place a child in the care of a designated local authority - such as Derbyshire County Council - with responsibility being shared between the public body and the baby's parents.
The orders are only made if the court is satisfied that harm or potential harm could occur if the child remains in the sole custody of the parents.
Out of the total 128 babies, less than half - 60 - ended up being adopted. The majority of the children went into foster care.
