    Derby's old Debenhams building is going to be demolished next year.

    The former department store, in the Becketwell area, has been empty since 2007. The city council has said its demolition will be a "key milestone" in the regeneration of the city centre.

    Work is planned to start in spring 2019 with the first redevelopment of the Becketwell area anticipated to commence in 2020.

    Officers stopped a van on the M1 and found it was full of crates of wine police believe was stolen from a lorry stopped in a lay-by.

    Armed officers took part in the operation near J30 early this morning where officers pulled over the van which they suspect was also stolen.

    Today's cash machine theft in Bingham comes on the same day a report is released by ATM operator Cardtronics, which said the number of attacks on cash machines has doubled in four years.

    It said attempts to steal cash using diggers or explosives are "highly dangerous" and can leave rural communities cut off from their source of cash.

    Last month an explosive was used to take cash from a machine at a Post Office in Spondon, Derby which still remains closed because of the damage caused.

    Firefighters from across Nottinghamshire were needed to tackle a fire in a semi-detached house last night.

    An ambulance was also called to the scene in Mansfield and treated someone for minor injuries.

    It started shortly before 20:25 but the people inside had already been rescued by the time the fire engines arrived.

    The crews then spent about two hours putting out the flames in Cherry Grove.

    Explosives are thought to have been used by five people in balaclavas to get to a supermarket cash machine in Bingham.

    Windows were smashed by the blast at the Co-op in Market Place to get to the money.

    Nottinghamshire Police said they were called to the shop at about 01:40 this morning and are investigating.

    A trusted carer has admitted theft after a hidden camera in a bedroom filmed her stealing cash.

    The family in Normanton-on-the-Wolds had set up the motion-detecting camera after 10 items of jewellery worth £20,000 was stolen from their house, police said.

    Graziella Avetti, 61, is seen on the footage taking money from the homeowner's purse and also took cash from the bedside cabinet while she was meant to be caring for their mother with dementia.

    At Nottingham Crown Court yesterday Avetti, of Greenside Close, Long Eaton was given a 12-month community order after admitting taking £130.

    She was also ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and to pay £750 prosecution costs.

    Nottinghamshire Police said no-one has been arrested over the theft of the jewellery.

    The refurbishment of Derby's Assembly Rooms will use money set aside to pay for the rebuilding of demolished public pool.

    The Conservatives say the development of Moorways will still go ahead but they're taking £13 million out of the pot for the new swimming complex.

    The council says it's just a matter of timing and they will look at how else they can pay for the new pool early next year.

    The original pool was knocked down in 2017 and plans to replace it are expected to cost tens of millions of pounds.

    Nottingham has been chosen to develop the world's first electric race aeroplane.

    The University of Nottingham and Air Race E are creating a prototype plane which will use an electric motor, instead of the current petrol powered engine and the technology developed could shape the future of electric planes.

    "There is no electric racing category running at the moment for aeroplanes in which people fly," said research fellow, Richard Glassock.

    "This will be the first large category of piloted aeroplane that we know of."

    But he said it will take a long time before we get to go on holiday in one.

    Burglars broke in to a Derbyshire house and took two guns, police have said.

    It happened between 21:30 and 21:55 on Monday in Prospect Avenue in South Normanton.

    Officers are appealing for help tracking down the offenders.

    Letters to a Jewish single mother have been used to tell the story of how she fled to Market Harborough from Nazi Vienna in 1939, leaving behind her 14-year-old son.

    Hedwig left her only son Kurt waving from the platform as she left on a train to escape the Nazis.

    She worked as a household cook in the Leicestershire town and earlier this year letters sent to her by Kurt were discovered in a loft.

    They reveal his loneliness and harassment he faced because of his Jewish background and his eventual escape.

    They've now been turned into an online exhibition by the Wiener Library Holocaust archive in London.

    A Leicestershire mum has warned about the dangers of button batteries in the run up to Christmas.

    The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch is currently looking in to the death of a child who swallowed one and interviewed Kerrie Heath about her experience..

    Her daughter Kelsie still has to have medical treatment, 5 years after she got one of the batteries stuck up her nose.

    Mum Kerrie wants people to be more aware of the damage they can cause, telling the BBC "I would hate for anybody to have to go through what Kelsie is going through now just because they didn't realise".
