    East Midlands Railway has said today's snow could delay or disrupt services.

    The train company is currently running to timetable but it has warned the snow forecast throughout the region today could affect that.

    It said this is because snow and ice can block tracks, stopping trains moving between them.

    Icicles on tunnels and bridges can damage trains, forcing them to drive slower, and the vehicles cannot travel through snow deeper than 30cm (12in) without snow ploughs being used.

    The overnight snow is causing traffic problems across the region, with a few crashes and road closures delaying journeys.

    A crash involving four cars on the M1 southbound at junction 29 closed two lanes this morning, meaning queues of up to 90 minutes, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.

    Leicestershire Police have urged people to avoid roads around Uppingham because of the snow and said there are "lots of cars stuck" on the A6003.

    In Derbyshire, the A6024 Holme Moss is also currently closed.

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said snow and ice, particularly on smaller roads, has led to a number of crashes.

    The East Midlands is waking up to a snowy start this morning - and there's more on the way.

    The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow, covering most of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire from until 14:00 today.

    There is also a yellow weather warning for snow and ice covering the whole region until midnight on Wednesday.

    And wrap up warm because it is not expected to reach above freezing all day, dipping to as low as -3C (27F) later in the evening.

    A yellow warning for snow and ice will be in place across the East Midlands until at least Wednesday as Storm Darcy makes its way across the UK.

    The Met Office warning is for Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire from 15:00 GMT on Sunday until 23:59 GMT on Wednesday.

    Forecasters have warned the storm will bring heavy snowfall in the South East and the East, but the cold snap is not expected to be as widespread as 2018's Beast from the East.

    The cold weather will last until at least the middle of the week, said BBC Weather forecaster Billy Payne.

    He said: "Temperatures will be remaining below freezing by day for some, with snow showers most frequent in the east where significant accumulations are likely, and a risk of ice.

    "A severe wind chill too."

    Derbyshire County Council has said gritters will be out on Sunday after several roads, including the A57 Snake Pass, were closed overnight due to snowfall.

    The Met Office is warning snow and ice will affect most of the East Midlands over the weekend and Monday.

    The yellow warning is in place from 15:00 on Saturday until 00:00 on Monday, external and it means there's a small chance of travel delays and power cuts.

    The Met Office said: "Cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into the following week with some disruption from snow and ice possible."

    Flags across the East Midlands have been lowered following the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

    Nottingham City Council said: "He was a beacon of hope who lifted the nation when we needed it most."

    Other local authorities in the region have also paid tribute to Capt Sir Tom who died with coronavirus on Tuesday.

    Flags are half-mast at council HQs including, Charnwood (pictured below), Derby (pictured bottom), South Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales and Rushcliffe.

    The 100-year-old World War Two veteran raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

    Hospitals too have been showing their respect. A tweet posted by Nottingham University Hospitals yesterday thanked Captain Sir Tom Moore you "for everything you have done".
