    We've just had a statement from Severn Trent about the burst pipe and flooding in Milford.

    It said: "We’re making good progress in isolating the pipe and expect to have the water turned off in the next hour or so.

    "Once we’ve done that, we can start to dig down, assess the damage and start the repair. We don’t believe any customers will lose their water supply as a result of this.

    Here's the current scene near the entrances of Makeney Hall and The Holly Bush Inn in Milford after a water main burst in a nearby field.

    Severn Trent said it has a team on site and hoped to have the water turned off "in the next hour or so".

    More Staffordshire bull terriers are abandoned in Leicester than any other dog, according to figures released by the council.

    Every year from 2015 to 2018 more dogs of this breed type than any other have been collected by the city council and taken to a rescue shelter.

    However the number has significantly declined over the years - in 2015 the authority dealt with 152 Staffordshire-type dogs but last year, up to October, it dealt with just 70.

    That's still 51 more than the second most commonly abandoned breed a terrier. Figures, released following a Freedom of Information request from BBC Radio Leicester, were only available up to October.

    Last year the authority issued three warnings for “out of control” dogs. One of these was a Staffordshire bull terrier.

    Police investigating a serious assault in Long Eaton are appealing for help to find the man seen in this CCTV footage.

    On New Years Day a 41-year-old man was punched and kicked to the head. He suffered a fractured jaw and eye socket as a result of the attack.

    De Montfort University is switching off all its social media channels for a few days as an example to encourage its students to try their own "digital detox".

    University bosses said they wanted to highlight how "unrestrained social media use" can be harmful to the mental health of young people.

    The university operates nine different social media channels, including Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.

    Vice-chancellor Prof Dominic Shellard, who says he will stop using Twitter, said: "In conversations I've had with students, I've been really struck by the degree to which their over-engagement on social media is having a negative impact on their mental health.

    "They don't want to come off social media completely but they do want to recalibrate their relationship with social media."

    The A6 is currently closed in the village as is Shaw Lane, Red Lane and Makeney Road at the junction with Derby Road.

    Emergency services and Severn Trent are at the scene. Police are advising members of the public to avoid the area.

    A car has flipped onto its roof at Morrisons car park in Belper this afternoon.

    Police have said they were called to a report of an overturned car at about 12:15.

    There were two people inside at the time - a woman who managed to get out by herself and a man who was trapped and needed help to be freed.

    He's been taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

    Lecturers at 16 English colleges are to stage two days of strike action in a dispute over pay.

    Members of the University and College Union (UCU) will walk out at the end of the month, with warnings of further action if the row remains unresolved.

    The strikes are due to on 29 January and follow industrial action last November. The union said college bosses had failed to make a decent offer to staff it maintains have seen the value of their pay fall by 25% over the past decade.

    Strikes at Leicester College are due to be held on 29 and 31 January.

    A hospital which is struggling to recruit paediatric nurses is having to ferry children to another unit, at a cost of £14,000 a month.

    For more than two years, Bassetlaw hospital, in Worksop, has had to close its paediatric unit overnight seven days a week because of a lack of staff.

    It has since spent £330,000 with a private company to have an ambulance on standby, ferrying severely ill children to Doncaster for treatment, a drive of about 35 minutes.

    Moira Hardy, director of nursing at the trust which runs Bassetlaw and Doncaster hospitals, said they did manage to recruit specialist staff in seven recruitment drives last year but several people left because of "retirements and opportunities elsewhere".

    "There is a national shortage of registered paediatric nurses and as such we will continue to work with our partners, such as the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System to identify possible solutions for issues such as recruitment," she added.

    M&S is to close stores in Buxton and Newark as part of a restructure.

    The retailer is planning to shut 100 British stores over the next few years and the pair feature among a list of 17 it no longer wants.

    M&S had already closed 30 stores and identified a further eight it planned to shut before today's announcement.

    It has not said when either store will shut.

    A man was arrested last night on suspicion of theft after he was pulled over driving a digger down the A38.

    The 52-year-old was stopped at 22:10 near Coxbench after a digger had been reported stolen from a building site in Mackworth.

    The man, from Leeds, remains in police custody.
