    A mum of two five-year-old twins has come back to her Leicestershire family home while she fights a deadly cancer.

    Meena Kumari-Sharma, 41, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia and has been given odds of 28,000 to one to find a match.

    She is currently running a social media campaign from Oadby to find a stem cell donor between bouts of chemotherapy at Leicester Royal Infirmary, with a particular focus on getting more Asian people to come forwards.

    She has so far raised more than £4,000 for the purpose.

    From rehearsals in a kitchen in Kniveton to Derby Theatre, an ensemble made up of asylum seekers say they are "humbled" by the response to their latest production.

    Phosphoros Theatre performed three sold-out shows of their production Pizza Shop Heroes over the weekend.

    The show tells the true stories of the four cast members who travelled unaccompanied as child asylum seekers to escape their war torn and poverty stricken countries.

    "That can be as simple as people who for a very short period of time don't feel to be in the right place, to people who have an extended period of poor mental health."

    A city centre bus bus depot could be replaced with a convention centre.

    The proposals, put forward by the Derby-Nottingham Metro board, would see the new facility built on the site of Nottingham's Manvers Street Depot, near Nottingham Arena.

    However, city council leader Jon Collins say the plans would need £20-30m from the government to become a reality.

    A centuries-old Derbyshire tourist attraction needs a new entrance because people can't be trusted not to take dangerous selfies on their way in.

    The main footpath entrance to the Heights of Abraham - which can be reached by cable car - is over a railway line at Matlock Bath.

    But Network Rail decided to close this crossing in December because people were taking selfies there and were at risk of being hit by trains. Now they have agreed to help towards the estimates £500,000 cost of a new footpath route in.

    It comes shortly after Derbyshire Dales District Council agreed to transfer land to the company that runs the Heights of Abraham for £10,000 so they could use it for this.

    In what seems to be becoming their cygneture move, police rescued a swan from the side of the A52 this weekend.

    Officers were called out to reports of an injured bird near the junction with the M1 on Saturday afternoon.

    They found the animal and coaxed it away to a nearby canal before reporting it to the RSPCA.

  14. Derbyshire firefighter 'might not go back' to refugee boatpublished at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2019

    A firefighter from Derbyshire who spent eleven days blockaded on board a migrant rescue ship in the Mediterranean says he might not go back, but the operation will continue.

    Brendan Woodhouse from Lea near Matlock was on board Sea Watch 3 with 47 rescued migrants when the Italian authorities refused to allow the boat to come into port.

    He is now home and told the BBC: "I think it's really important to keep people out there - it doesn't need to be me."

    A coroner ruled that 54-year-old Nigel Doughty had suffered a heart attack in his home gym.

    Officers want to speak to a group of children as young as 10 they saw walking on a frozen reservoir.

    The five were a "significant way from the shore" when police and firefighters arrived at Thornton Reservoir in Leicestershire.

    The youths started running over the thin ice but one fell through the ice in to the freezing water up to his waist.

    Police said: "What an exceptionally dangerous situation to put yourself in - risking your life for a ‘dare’."

    Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service in Market Bosworth commented on the police's post: "Seriously Stupid, that is all!!! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT...... it won’t end well."

    Officers are trying to track down an 18-year-old who went missing from Ilkeston on Sunday afternoon.

    Kyle Bosworth was last seen at 14:00 when he left his home wearing a green Manchester United t-shirt with a black McKenzie jacket, dark blue jeans and black trainers.

    He is described as white, 5ft 5ins tall, and skinny with mousy brown hair.
