    An inquest has opened into the death of a teenager who was hit by a bus.

    Sian Ellis, 15, died last Monday in Coalville. In the short hearing today, the coroner Trevor Kirkman said she was struck by the front nearside of a vehicle on Meadow Lane.

    The inquest at Rutland and North Leicestershire Coroner's Court was adjourned until the 2 May while police investigations continue.

    Leicestershire Police has been branded "institutionally racist" by the president of the National Black Police Association.

    Speaking to the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, Tola Munro spoke about a tree planted at the force's headquarters in memory of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, which he said had been damaged by police staff.

    Mr Munro added: "They’ve currently got five employment tribunal cases going on for grievances and the like.

    "That is currently unprecedented across the UK for one force alone to have four or five race related discrimination cases."

    Leonardo Da Vinci's "A Life in Drawing" brought more than 1,600 people through the doors on Saturday and Sunday.

    The gallery said the last time this figure was reached was in 1997 when it hosted an exhibition to celebrate the bicentenary of Joseph Wright's death.

    Canadian firm Sunrise Records has emerged as the buyer of collapsed music chain HMV, beating competition including Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley.

    The firm will buy 100 stores out of administration, securing 1,487 jobs, but 27 stores will close which will result in 455 redundancies.

    The retailer has branches in Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield but it is unknown which stores will close.

    Homes in Nottingham which have been without water this morning should start to get it back over the next couple of hours, Severn Trent has said.

    They said there had been a problem at one of their reservoirs but this has now been fixed.

    The water company did not say how many homes had been affected when asked, but people on social media were saying parts of Sherwood were without water.

    A 51-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences after armed police officers were deployed to the Mowmacre Hill area of Leicester yesterday.

    Shortly before noon police received a report of a man on Jersey Road in possession of a knife.

    A man from the area was subsequently charged with several offences including possession of a bladed article, assaulting an emergency worker and robbery.

    A 100-year-old woman who died after her neck was broken in a mugging, had been known to carry thousands in cash, a court heard.

    Sofija Kaczan, who is originally from Poland, died in June last year, more than a week after being attacked as she made her way to church in the Normanton area of Derby.

    Artur Waszkiewicz, 40, of Wolfa Street in the city, denies robbery and manslaughter.

    Angelika Cybulska, a friend of Mrs Kaczan who became her carer, told the trial at Derby Crown Court that she found £13,500 in Mrs Kaczan’s handbag when she went to hospital after a fall earlier last year.

    “She said to me I was saving money and I could give it to you and you could pay your mortgage,” Mrs Cybulska told the jury.

    “I said you cannot take that amount of money out with you, you should put it into a bank account.”

    Mrs Cybulska, said Mrs Kaczan later put £13,000 in the bank, keeping the remaining £500 in a smaller green handbag.

    The court heard that Mrs Kaczan would then collect her pension in cash and put it in her handbag.

    The trial continues.

    A nine-week-old puppy who was found tied to a dustbin behind some shops has found a new home - and a new friend.

    Denzel the staffie-cross is now five months old and thanks to a big appetite has more than doubled his weight since he moved in with his new owners, Karen Whyatt and husband Jim. The couple already have a five-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Wilson.

    Karen, a psychiatric nurse based in Ilkeston, who adopted him from the RSPCA in Chesterfield, said: “We were not looking for another dog but when I saw an appeal for him needing a home I just fell in love.

    "Then I saw the press story about how he was dumped and tied to a bin - so that made me want him even more. We just wanted him to have the happy ending he deserved."

    A woman who threw away her parking ticket is now facing costs of more than £600 for littering.

    It happened in this car park in Ilkeston. Joanne Derry, from the town, was spotted by a Neighbourhood Warden throwing the ticket on the ground.

    Erewash Borough Council took the 41-year-old to court, where she was found guilty of littering.

    She had pleaded not guilty but failed to attend Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on January 31 and was told to pay a fine of £295, a victim surcharge of £30 and the council’s costs of £302.50.

    A 57-year-old man died after a two-car crash on a country road last night.

    A Volkswagon estate and a Range Rover were involved in a collision in Seagrave Road close to the Thrussington junction of the A46 in Leicestershire.

    The driver of the VW was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman in the Range Rover, described as in her 40s, was taken to hospital. She has since been discharged.

    Police are now appealing for witnesses.
