A grime artist has told MPs a rapper friend recently had a gig cancelled by a Derby venue when it realised he was a hip hop performer.
The comments, by London-based ShaoDow, formed part of a report by a group of cross-party MPs into discrimination faced by urban music artists.
The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee said it had "uncovered evidence of persisting prejudice against urban music and grime artists", which it warned was putting the future of the genre at risk.
ShaoDow told the committee his rapper friend "does not swear in any of his music and is about as positive as you could possibly be", but had a venue in Derby cancel on him recently after they "suddenly realised he is a hip hop artist".
DCMS Committee chairman Damian Collins said: "When it comes to live performance, it's shocking to hear that grime artists are continuing to face prejudice, which risks hampering the success of one of our most successful musical exports."
