  4. Fundraising appeal set up for vandalised trainspublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

Support has poured in for a heritage train centre after vandals broke in to three trains and smashed windows, causing around £80,000 of damage.

Yesterday organisers at the Great Central Railway Nottingham said they had "no idea" where they would get the money for the repairs but were "overwhelmed" by support and today set up a fundraiser.

On Monday afternoon six teenage boys were found by a volunteer smashing windows but ran off before they could be caught by police.

The fundraiser is called "We will not be broken" and the aim is to raise money cover the costs of repair to the damage to the rolling stock and improve site security in the future.

    Press Association

The aristocratic Grosvenor family has said it has pledged £105 million towards a modern rehabilitation centre for patients with severe injuries.

The late Duke of Westminster, Gerald Grosvenor, launched the Defence National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) at Stanford Hall, Nottinghamshire in 2010, gifting an initial £50 million towards the £300 million total.

The aim was to treat seriously injured members of the armed forces.

The current Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, 28, has now increased the total gift from the Grosvenor family to £105 million, and the extra cash will be used to help NHS patients.

  12. Pug can breathe again after £1,500 donationpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

An unwanted pug dog has been given life-changing surgery thanks to a large donation to the RSPCA in Derby.

Saffie, who was brought to the charity's Abbey Street shelter after her owner no longer felt able to look after her, was experiencing breathing difficulties due to her flat facial features.

The RSPCA launched an appeal to raise money for an operation to open up her airways - and a local supporter donated £1,500.

Georgina Wild, from the charity, said: "We are so grateful to each supporter who donated, most notably Sallie Cauldwell who was kind enough to donate £1,500.

"Sallie is local to our centre on Abbey Street and her generosity to a local animal in need is quite simply amazing.

"That single donation has meant that Saffie has received the operation required for her to breath with ease as unfortunately due to overbreeding she was having difficulty catching her breath."

The charity is now trying to find a new home for the pug.

  14. Application for canalside care homepublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

Plans for a canalside care home in Long Eaton - complete with roof terrace and boat house - have been put forward.

If approved in the next few months, the plans would see the 60-bed care home built off Tamworth Road on the former site of the Royal Oak pub, alongside Erewash Canal.

The buildings were demolished approximately four years ago, after years of being left empty, and the concrete-slabbed site is currently vacant and overgrown.

Plans for a 45-bed care home were approved for the site in April 2015 by the same applicant - but this was dropped after "concerns about the viability of a residential care home with only 45 bedrooms". As a result, the number of beds has been increased.

It is thought that the home would create at least 26 jobs.
