Ms Roberts said: "We were surprised he was found about 15 miles away from where he went missing and assume he may have hitched a ride in a car or someone took him but then didn’t want him.

"It's amazing to think he survived all these years outside and apart from an eye infection, which was treated, appeared in good health.”

RSPCA inspector Susan Hammond: "It is great to have a happy ending like this and just goes to show the importance of microchipping your pets."

    BBC Radio Derby, political reporter

Opposition parties have complained about Derbyshire County Council's use of social media.

The video features a photo of its Conservative leader who's a candidate in a district council election.

Labour and the Lib Democrats claim it is a breach of purdah rules, which forbid public bodies from getting involved in matters of political controversy during an election period.

Councils are also not supposed to issue photos of candidates.

The county council has said it's not subject to purdah because there aren't any upcoming county council elections. They claim the video doesn't highlight district or borough council issues.

Opposition groups dispute that interpretation of the rules.
