    BBC News

A supermarket has decided not to stock a vegan version of a pork pie in its Melton Mowbray store because it doesn't want to offend locals "who love the real thing".

The information has come from a leaked memo from Morrisons, which will be stocking the vegan alternative in other branches across the country instead.

The decision has been welcomed by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, but chairman Matthew O'Callaghan thinks the ban should apply everywhere.

"I think it's a misuse of the name," he said. "It's a bit like vegan cheese. It's not cheese because cheese is made with milk.

"If it's good, call it something else, and it will get that reputation and acquire that name."

A Morrisons spokeswoman confirmed the contents of the leaked memo were accurate, adding: "We have let our Melton store know they won't be selling the 'no pork' pie due to the town's strong heritage with the traditional pork pie."

Police have arrested two men and recovered up to 200 catalytic converters after attending a report of a theft from a business in Mansfield.

Two men, aged 29 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of theft at about 13:00 on Wednesday. Both remain in police custody.

A Leicester teaching assistant who was sacked after an 18-year-old disabled pupil nearly drowned has had her appeal dismissed.

Marilyn Smith and another teaching assistant admitted failing to take reasonable care of Sam Sebastian, who suffered a cardiac arrest at West Gate School in January 2016.

Sam slipped through his rubber buoyancy ring and "for about 90 seconds he was underwater before another member of staff saw him and pulled him out of the water".

Employment Judge Hutchinson noted the pupil "suffered brain damage because of the incident".

In July 2017 Smith and the other teaching assistant were given 12-month conditional discharges at Leicester Crown Court.

But Smith claimed unfair dismissal from her job at West Gate School.

A tribunal panel heard Smith claim "she was a scapegoat" and Leicester City Council, alongside the school's governing body, had "failed to take all mitigating circumstances into account".

Judge Hutchinson said Ms Smith "was not a scapegoat" and "she was responsible for her own actions", despite "major failings of health and safety".
