    Derbyshire Police's performance in reducing crime and keeping people safe has deteriorated, inspectors have said, external.

    The force has been told it requires improvement in both areas by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary Zoe Billingham, following a review of its performance in 2018/19.

    She said: "I have concerns about the performance of Derbyshire Constabulary in keeping people safe and reducing crime.

    "I have seen some deterioration in performance in important areas, including operational effectiveness and efficiency."

    Ms Billingham continued: "My overall assessment is that Derbyshire Constabulary’s performance has declined since our last inspection.

    "I am reassured however that the force has taken a range of immediate steps to address the matters highlighted in our inspection, and I will monitor improvements closely."

    Derbyshire Police, external said the identified shortcomings were "a direct consequence of 10 years of austerity where our frontline officers and staff have been working beyond their capacity to protect the public".

    A "large scale fire" at a retail park in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, has now been extinguished.

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at The Range, off Station Road, just after 05:00.

    At its height 55 firefighters were at the scene and a drone was used to help the incident commanders in charge.

    At 14:00 the service announced the fire was out and that most of their appliances had left the scene.

    It added a fire investigation is now taking place.

    Nottinghamshire Police are set to buy four electric vehicles to see how they will work as police cars.

    The force could have the cars on the roads as soon as the summer.

    The county's police and crime commissioner Paddy Tipping said he wants to make the force greener.

    He added: "We want to see what we can do on the limited mileage [of the car], and we're speaking to the council and energy companies about the charging points.

    "And if it's successful clearly we'll do more."

    A police helicopter was used to hunt for a man who threatened staff in a McDonald's with a bow and arrow.

    The suspect went into the restaurant in Castle Marina, Nottingham, at about 19:50 on Thursday but it is unclear the nature of the threats.

    No-one was injured and no arrests have been made but officers said they were taking the incident "very seriously".

    They have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

    It would seem football and foxes don't always mix well in Leicestershire.

    This fox had to be rescued from a school playing field in Market Harborough after getting tangled up in the goal net.

    The school groundsman contacted the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital after finding the animal last month.

    The hospital posted on Facebook: "He had tangled himself up around his neck and chest, which caused him breathing difficulties made worse by panic so we had to work fast.

    "He was exhausted so we decided to take him in for a couple of nights to monitor."

    He was found to not have any serious wounds and was released close to where he was found 48 hours later.

    A busy section of the A52 in Nottingham is going to remain closed until early next week, it has been announced.

    Highways England closed the road eastbound on Thursday afternoon, saying damaged steel underneath Clifton Bridge needed to be assessed.

    One lane of the westbound carriageway was then also closed.

    The closures caused long delays on the A52 in both directions on Friday morning.

    Other roads in and around Nottingham have also been heavily congested.

    Highways England has now confirmed the restrictions will remain in place "until early next week".

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service says it is scaling down its presence at the scene of a retail park fire.

    At its height 55 firefighters were tackling the blaze at The Range, off Station Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, which began just after 05:00.

    Twelve fire engines have been called to a "large scale fire" in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

    Crews, including some from Derbyshire, went to The Range Store on Station Road just after 05:00.

    The surrounding retail park has been closed but Station Road has reopened.

    There are no reports of any injuries but nearby residents have been asked to keep their windows closed while the incident continues.

    The closure of the eastbound carriageway of the A52 at Clifton Bridge is continuing to cause major disruption this morning.

    Damage was spotted to steel under the road during routine checks of the concrete structure yesterday.

    The road is closed eastbound from the A453 at Queen's Drive, down towards Clifton Lane.

    A lane is closed on the westbound carriageway and there are lane restrictions for the Queen's Medical Centre on Beeston Road also, as emergency works continue.

    Meanwhile, it's absolutely solid heading through the city - there are queues backing on to Crown Island and a number of bus routes are being affected.

    A 49-year-old man has been charged with firearms offences in connection with an incident in Long Eaton on Wednesday.

    Derbyshire Police said officers were called to a property on Briar Gate at about 07:45 after receiving reports about a man with a firearm.

    Stephen Cross, of no fixed abode, has been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and having a firearm with intent to resist arrest, and will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

    Five men and a woman, who were arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man was found at an allotment, have been released on bail.

    Andrew Jackson, 55, was found by officers off Prospect Drive in Shirebrook on 26 January.

    Derbyshire Police said the six people were a 51-year-old woman and five men aged 26, 27, 37, 39 and 44.

    Det Insp Christopher Marriott said the investigation "is still very much ongoing".
