Twycross Zoo has said, external it has been on a "rollercoaster ride" after being told zoos are likely to reopen on 15 June.

The Leicestershire wildlife centre - which costs more than £500,000 a month to run - had said it faced "extinction" due to coronavirus lockdown measures.

At the end of last month Twycross, along with other zoos, were told they must remain closed indefinitely.

This was despite it putting a number of changes in place to maintain social distancing - and restrictions easing elsewhere.

Now the government is expected to announce zoos can reopen at the same time as "non-essential" shops.

The zoo said: "We've been on a rollercoaster ride over the last few weeks, and because of you and your amazing support, the government has listened."

She said the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been "pretty dire" and will take "a long time" to recover from, but thanked the public for the "fantastic" support while they carry on looking after the animals.

    Greig Watson

In a statement, it said it did not want to "politicise the issue" and some councillors felt the flags could set a "dangerous precedent".

But Derbyshire LGBT+ said: "This is an example that the fight for LGBT+ acceptance still has a long way to go.

"The decision actually promotes and helps to encourage prejudice and ignorance, something that all organisations should be doing their utmost to eradicate."
