  16. Leicester 'could be in lockdown for a year'published at 18:00 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Leicester could end up having been left in lockdown for a full year, the city’s mayor has conceded.

Sir Peter Soulsby said there was "little prospect of release" from the current tier three restrictions before March next year, citing delays receiving data and issues with mass testing as some of the reasons.

So far Leicester has spent 151 days in local lockdown, with the city now counting up 249 days since it was last free of any level of Covid restrictions.

Sir Peter - who apologised in June after breaching the restrictions in place at the time - also criticised central government for a lack of information over testing and tracing, saying they had hampered efforts to get to the bottom of local outbreaks.

There are a lot of miserable people in this city, there are a lot of people in this city who have stuck to the rules throughout and see no reward. When the rates did come right down, we still weren’t released from local lockdown. That doesn’t give people the faith, the belief, the encouragement to do it again.

  17. Nottingham Christmas market to return with no bars or skatingpublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    BBC News Online

Nottingham's Christmas market will open next weekend, the city council has announced.

That is despite the city returning to the highest tier 3 restrictions after lockdown ends next week.

The market will be home to an 18m-tall Christmas tree, rides and a 32m-high observation wheel and will include 40 chalet-style stalls and takeaway refreshments.

But the tier restrictions mean there will be no outdoor ice skating rink this year and no bars but there will be non-alcoholic mulled wine on offer.

City councillor Sam Webster said: “Despite the restrictions, challenges we’ve all faced and the need to do things differently this year, having a Christmas market is important for local people and the city’s local economy.

"It invites people into the city centre for a bit of festivity, to enjoy what the Christmas market traders can offer."

He said the council is working with retailers and public transport providers to prevent overcrowding.

The stalls will be spread across Old Market Square as well as on Long Row and Smithy Row to help with social distancing.

The market is set to open every day from 10:00 to 21:00 from 5 to 24 December.
