  12. Widow blames Covid-19 for husband's cancer deathpublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A woman has said she blames disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic for her husband's death from cancer.

Graham Grady, from Great Glen, died in January aged 77 following what his widow Tina described as a "catalogue of errors" in the health system over the past year.

A GP appointment in early 2020 - which was conducted virtually due to Covid restrictions - saw his leg pain dismissed as sciatica.

When the pain continued, Mr Grady had an MRI scan at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in August but never received any results.

It was only in November, when his condition worsened that he underwent further scans and was told he had cancer.

Mrs Grady said: "We assumed that having not heard anything [after the August MRI scan] there was nothing for us to be worried about.

"In fact, all that time cancer was having a party in his body and no-one spotted it.

“Graham died of cancer but because of Covid. Not because he had it, but because everything went on hold for it.

“It’s Covid this, Covid that. I understand that Covid is awful and that it’s killed thousands but there are other things killing people, including my husband.

“Cancer patients have been failed. It’s not good enough, they deserve more."

A spokesperson for Leicester’s Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Grady’s family at this difficult time.

"As a trust, we encourage anyone who has any concerns with the care that they or their loved ones receive to contact us directly so that the concerns can be investigated thoroughly.”
