A former teacher has been sentenced for sexually assaulting two children while they were at a Nottinghamshire primary school in the 1980s.

David Allen, who was teaching at the school at the time, indecently assaulted an eight-year-old boy after taking him out of his classroom, Nottinghamshire Police said.

He also abused a nine-year-old boy in the playground.

Allen, of Occupation Road, in Huddersfield, had admitted two counts of indecent assault at an earlier hearing.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, the 62-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years.

He was also put on the sex offenders register for life and handed a restraining order.

Police said the offences were reported in September 2019 and February 2020.

Det Con Jo Cox said the two victims were "very brave" to come forward after decades.

"Their ongoing strength and courage is a true credit to each of them," she said.

"The incidents will have had a massive impact on them and [have] continued to do so throughout their lives.

"Allen was in a position of trust. His sentencing will never make up for what happened."

  13. Fireworks and bonfires banned at beauty spotpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

    BBC News

A ban on bonfires, barbecues, Chinese lanterns and fireworks at Vicar Water Country Park has been approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) prohibits the use of any object that "poses a risk of fire" at the park in Clipstone.

The council said it is being introduced following "persistent fire-related anti-social behaviour" at the beauty spot.

In June 2020, the authority said an illegal firework display caused fires to two separate pieces of grassland and in November, after Bonfire Night, a wooden bench and signage were also left burnt out.

In April 2019, land on the park the size equivalent of 14 football pitches was destroyed by arson, the council added.

The PSPO, once legally declared by the council, will come into effect as soon as possible.

It covers the whole of the park, with three small exclusion areas to allow smoking.

Anyone caught breaching the order could be fined £100.

  14. Wife reunited with paralysed husband for daughter's birthpublished at 11:53 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

    BBC News

Medical teams worked together to make sure a man with a "life-changing" spinal injury was able to be present at the birth of his daughter despite receiving specialist treatment at a different hospital.

Jordan Anderson, 24, was being treated at a specialist centre in Sheffield after an abscess burst in his spinal cord, causing paralysis from the ribs down.

His wife Emily, 23, hadn't seen her husband since he was admitted when she began giving birth at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Jemma Cox, the midwife looking after Mrs Anderson, said: “I knew from speaking to Emily that it was her wish to have Jordan at the birth, it was a source of anxiety for her especially as we got closer to the due date, so we started to explore how we could do that."

Teams from both centres worked together to allow Mr Anderson to be admitted as a temporary patient at the Chesterfield hospital's orthopaedic department.

Mrs Anderson had to be induced and when the baby’s heart rate began to deteriorate a decision was made for her to have an emergency Caesarean section.

"I was anxious and scared, all I wanted was for Jordan to be there with me," she said.

“I heard one of the theatre staff saying something like, ‘we need to get dad here’, and within five minutes he was here. I’ve never felt so happy to see anyone," she added.

Mr Anderson said being there for the birth of their daughter Elsie "meant the world" to him.

He was then able to spend more time with his wife and daughter during his temporary stay.
