Charlotte Cupit, cabinet member for highways, told BBC Radio Derby the snow ploughs were out on principle routes in the Peak District area today.

She added: "We have some challenging conditions as we are in the midst of the Met Office's amber warning.

"We'd urge motorists not to make journeys unless absolutely necessary, and use public transport where possible – but check services are running before you leave home.

"Be mindful that the worst of the snow is forecast for the afternoon.
