People in Devon and Cornwall are being asked if they're prepared to pay a 15% increase in the police's share of council tax because a referendum in Bedfordshire showed people were against such raises, a senior member of the Police Commissioner's Office says.
Commissioner Tony Hogg wants the increase to protect officer numbers. The move would add about £25 a year to the bill of the average band D property.
Commissioner office chief executive Andrew White said: "It [the Bedfordshire referendum] went 30% in favour, and 70% against, and that's why the commissioner wants to consult. He wants to be certain that he's got a reasonable amount of public support before he has the cost of the referendum."
