  1. Police council tax rise 'opposed in other area'published at 12:21

    People in Devon and Cornwall are being asked if they're prepared to pay a 15% increase in the police's share of council tax because a referendum in Bedfordshire showed people were against such raises, a senior member of the Police Commissioner's Office says.

    Commissioner Tony Hogg wants the increase to protect officer numbers. The move would add about £25 a year to the bill of the average band D property.

    Commissioner office chief executive Andrew White said: "It [the Bedfordshire referendum] went 30% in favour, and 70% against, and that's why the commissioner wants to consult. He wants to be certain that he's got a reasonable amount of public support before he has the cost of the referendum."

    A furious row has erupted in Hayle over silk poppies being banned from a local church.

  4. Missing Hackney woman 'may be in Cornwall'published at 11: 48

    Police in London are appealing, external to trace a woman who went missing from her home in Hackney and may be in Cornwall.

    The Metropolitan Police said 37-year-old Alicja Stawkowski was last seen on Thursday morning. Officers added that she suffered from depression and "her family are concerned for her welfare".

    She is described as white, of slim build, with long hair, and 5ft 6ins tall. She was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket and black trousers.

  5. Man suffers back injuries in car crashpublished at 11:36

    A man has been treated for back injuries after a road crash, Devon and Somerset Fire Service says, external.

    Fire crews were called to the A3072 in the Hatherleigh area at about 06:00. Only one vehicle was involved in the incident.

  6. New St Ives lifeboat arriving at weekendpublished at 11:12

    Cornwall’s first Shannon class lifeboat is due to arrive in St Ives on Saturday, the RNLI says, external.

    Volunteer lifeboat crew members, led by coxswain Rob Cocking, will bring the Shannon class lifeboat Nora Stachura into the town harbour at midday.

  7. Blood test success for south west scientistspublished at 11:01

    Research done in the south west into a simple, accurate and low risk blood test is said to be a world first.

    Plymouth NHS Trust and Plymouth University have collaborated on the test to detect fetal blood group, gender and genetic conditions in unborn babies.

    It can use the blood taken from the mother when she has her first appointment with her GP. The research has been published in the international scientific journal, Clinical Chemistry, external.

    Police are investigating the theft of power tools worth £1,400, external from a building site in Camelford.

    The force said the tools, including a Belle electric mixer, a STIHL disc-cutter, a Bosch hammer drill, a Dewalt impact driver, a Dewalt drill set and Bosch braker, were taken from a house under construction in Trefew Road.

    A north Devon auction of celebrity pants and bras has raised £5,000 for charity

    Heather Walters from Barnstaple organised the sale to raise money for the charity Coppafeel, external after receiving treatment for breast cancer.

    Heather said: "I quite liked Alan Carr's vest where he said that he doesn't wear pants, and I love Ed Sheeran's just because I love Ed Sheeran."

    Police bosses claim a rise in council tax would save hundreds of officer posts, as it faced budget cuts.

    The proposal being put to the public would add about £25 a year to the bill of the average band D property in Devon and Cornwall.

    - Only one Torpoint ferry is running due to technical problems - waiting times have stretched to 30 minutes
