  1. 'More action needed' to cut malnutrition hospital admissionspublished at 15:26

    More action is needed to prevent hospital admissions for people suffering from malnutrition, the government says.   

    The South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust saw 143 such cases from 2012-14, and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust 132, a Freedom of Information request by the BBC shows, external.

    The Department of Health said: "Malnutrition is unacceptable. Though the rising figures we have seen may well be in part due to better diagnosis and detection, even more action is required."

  2. Van left suspended on automatic bollardpublished at 15:17

    A van has been left suspended on a controversial automatic bollard in Falmouth.

    They're used in town centres to stop traffic, but drivers with permits - such as taxis, buses and delivery drivers - can electrically lower them to the ground, and they will rise once the vehicle has passed.

    However, driver Darren Thomas's vehicle has been stuck in his van on top of the bollard since about 11:00. Mr Thomas said Cornwall Council had contacted but had yet to get him down, and that his axle had been left "like a banana".  

  3. Defence spending review: Drones and maritime patrol aircraft could come to RAF St Mawganpublished at 15:08

    The Prime Minister could announce some big news for the South West later during a review of defence and security.

    Some believe there's a slim chance maritime patrol aircraft could be based at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall. There's also a chance the base might be used to test or operate drones - an expected area of growth.

    Another important issue is manpower. If there are any plans for expansion of recruitment - particularly in the Navy - that could be good news for HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, and possibly even the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre at Lympstone.

    Launceston head coach Jimmy Tucker was 'bitterly disappointed' after his side lost 29-26 at Bury St Edmunds.

    Launceston led 19-12 Richard Friend, Ben Hilton and Jamie Salter's first-half tries, but the home side scored three times after the break before Friend got a second late on. 

    "I'm bitterly disappointed, they deserved better. Our forwards put in a hell of a shift, worked really hard and I suppose we've got to give credit to Bury St Edmunds' defence, it held out really well," he said.

    The charity, external Arts for Health Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is to close after 14 years, bosses say.

    Managers said they had made the "difficult decision" after financial forecasts indicated the organisation was "no longer sustainable". 

    It said: "Over the next two months we will be working to ensure as smooth a closure as possible, with current commitments that extend into next year being handed over as appropriate, and staff will continue to be available during this period."

  6. Exeter health trust sees fall in malnutrition admissionspublished at 14:39

    A Devon health trust has seen a decrease in cases of people with malnutrition within three years, figures from a Freedom of Information request by the BBC show.

    The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust had 59 hospital admissions in 2012. It fell 40 in 2014. 

    The trust had 132 such cases from 2012-14. The government said that malnutrition was "unacceptable".

  7. More than 800 deaths 'linked' to air pollution in the South West, claims charitypublished at 14:26

    A national road safety charity says more than 800 deaths in the South West last year have been linked to air pollution.

    The charity Brake, says the figures from Public Health England, has prompted it to launch a national campaign, external calling on drivers to 'drive less and live more'.

  8. Lorry overturns blocking road near Plymouth this morningpublished at 14:12

    Black ice has been blamed, external for two crashes on a major road through the South Hams this morning. In total four vehicles were involved in both crashes and include a silver Ford Ranger, a blue Nissan Micra, a blue Renault Master van and another unknown vehicle.

    We should find out how many Type 26 frigates the Royal Navy will get - the hope is 13, but the reality is probably much lower, possibly eight, but half of those are expected to be based at Devonport.

    Exeter and England hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie has been ruled out until the new year after breaking his thumb.

    The 22-year-old, who made his England debut against France in August, has had surgery to repair the injury.

  11. Accused pleads guilty to Tanis Bhandari murderpublished at 13:38

    A man accused of killing builder Tanis Bhandari on New Year's Day has pleaded guilty to his murder. 

    Ryan Williams, 22, of Haydon Grove, St Budeaux, Plymouth changed his plea during his trial.

    Donald Pemberton, 21, who is also charged with murdering Mr Bhandari, 27, denies killing him. Mr Bhandari was stabbed twice after leaving a pub in Tamerton Foliot, Plymouth Crown Court has heard.

    Truro's new city centre bus lane on Tregolls Road has officially been taken out of service today - after less than three weeks. The news has prompted many comments on BBC Radio Cornwall's Facebook page, external, including:

    - Thorgrimm Wodensson: Cornwall Council needs a complete overhall [sic]. It's disgusting that they can waste so much money and get away with it

    - David Perry: Sack senior staff from highways dept, they've shown by this that they're not worth the money you pay them

    - Mookie Ba: total waste and it couldnt have happen'd at a worse time

    - Diane Turner McParland Much like the pedestrian crossing that was put in St Just a few years ago. Not sure if it actually got finished before it was removed.

  14. Police appeal after woman and child seriously injured in Torquay crashpublished at 13:05

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman and child were seriously injured following a crash in Torquay at the weekend.

    Five pedestrians - two adults and three children - were walking along Torbay Road when a silver Daihatsu mounted the pavement and collided with a six-year-old girl and her 35-year-old mother.

    The mother has life-changing injuries and the girl is in a stable condition. The driver, a 53-year-old man, was taken to Torbay Hospital with minor injures. The road was closed for seven-and-a-half hours on Sunday.

    Exeter City director of football Steve Perryman praised boss Paul Tisdale's team selection following their 2-1 derby win at Plymouth.

    Tisdale surprised many by choosing young forwards Jamie Reid and Ollie Watkins to face the League Two leaders.

    Reid had just returned from a loan spell at Truro City, while Watkins played for just the seventh time. "We made a lot of decisions about the training and the selection and you have to say it's been a success," he said.

  16. Tributes to Cornwall fire dog Nelsonpublished at 12:22

    Tributes have been paid to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service's fire investigation dog, external, Nelson, who has died after a short illness.

    The service said the seven-and-a-half-year-old springer spaniel had been "an invaluable member" of its team for six years.

    He was often employed to help identify the cause of fires. The service said: "His expertise has helped to identify cases of arson in support of both fire and police investigations, helping to lead to the conviction of those responsible."  

  17. Family 'devastated' at man's deathpublished at 12:12

    The family of a man who was found dead at a property in Torquay last week say it has left them "devastated" that he was taken from them at such a young age.

    A murder inquiry has been launched after 36-year-old David Earnshaw was found in Warberry Road West last Monday.

    Four people, who were arrested, have been released without charge. Police said their inquiries were continuing.

  18. Bus lane closes after just three weeks, but who's responsible?published at 12:02

    That bus lane (or park and ride lane) in Truro has officially closed today after less than three weeks. We'll hear more from the Cornwall Councillor in charge of the roads, Bert Biscoe.

    And there's been a significant increase in the number of dogs being stolen - up a staggering 40% over the past three years.

    - Between Landrake and Saltash on the A38 eastbound one lane is blocked due to an accident.

    - Between Modbury and Ashford the A379 is blocked by an overturned lorry and two accidents. Police are reporting black ice in the area.

    - Near South Molton the B3227 is partially blocked near Silcombe Hill due to an accident.

    - In Totnes the A385 Bridgetown Hill around New Road, there are temporary traffic lights for electricity work. Traffic is very slow moving and queueing. 

    - In South Brent Vicarage Road is partially blocked at Station Approach because of a collision.
