  1. Man appears in court over fatal Looe coach crashpublished at 11:09

    A man has appeared before magistrates in Cornwall, charged with causing the deaths of two women by dangerous driving.

    Martin Chun, who's 59 and from Exeter, was driving a coach which crashed on a steep hill in Morval near Looe in 2014 - two of the passengers Margeret Luxton and Carol Muldoon were killed. 

    He was also charged with causing serious injury through dangerous driving to four other people travelling on the coach. Mr Chun entered no plea at Bodmin magistrates, he will appear again at Truro Crown Court next month.

    A school in Cornwall has become one of only a few to be recognised as a centre of excellence in financial education.

    Bodriggy Academy, external in Hayle has taken part in a year-long national programme which aims to provide pupils with skills in money management. 

    The children have been learning how to budget money by using role play and being given an allowance to shop with.

  4. Newspaper and magazine distributor Smiths News cuts 60 jobs in Plymouthpublished at 10:35

    Sixty people will lose their jobs at a newspaper and magazine distributor in Plymouth, the company has said.

    Staff at Smiths News were told about the job cuts - which will happen in April - on Wednesday. The magazine side of the firm, which makes up the majority of the workforce, is moving to Newport, bosses said.

    The firm added that part of its firm will remain at Langage in Plympton. The company claims to be the UK's leading newspaper and magazine wholesaler.

  5. Superfast broadband in remote areas rolling outpublished at 10:24

    Work has started to roll out superfast broadband across some of the remotest parts of Devon.

    It means people on both Dartmoor and Exmoor should be able to access faster internet speeds.

    Instead of laying fibre optic cable, masts are being installed as part of a wireless broadband system.

    Devon County Council said it was hoped the first customers would go live in the next few months.

  6. Girl, 12, in 'serious but stable' condition following police car collisionpublished at 10:11

    The 12-year-old girl knocked over by a police car in Camborne yesterday remains in a 'serious but stable' condition in hospital in Bristol.

    The girl was flown to Bristol Children's Hospital by air ambulance following the crash on Trevenson Street at about 08:00 - the police have said officers were responding to a "violent incident" with the blue lights on.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

  8. Tributes paid to young Devon cricketer, who's died aged 28published at 09:39

    The Devon cricket community has been left 'devastated' at the death of a young fast bowler.

    Tom Allin, 28, was found dead on Monday night on the River Torridge Bridge - he had represented Devon and Warwickshire.

    In a statement on the Devon Cricket website, external, the North Devon CC chairman Mark Ansell said: “Everyone at the club is devastated by the news of Tom’s death. We all feel so sad for Tom’s family. He was a great guy and this has come as such a shock."

    Hundreds of house owners in Cornwall and west Devon who are trapped in properties blighted by mundic block, external could have a change in fortune. 

    Rules governing the classification of mundic block - a so-called concrete cancer - have been updated. Properties previously placed in the A/B category will immediately be transferred into a new A2 category and be fully mortgageable.

    It could make the difference between someone being able to get a full market asking price when selling their property rather than losing thousands of pounds.

  11. Housing estate 'causing other homes to flood'published at 09:03

    Residents in Bideford who claim a nearby housing estate is causing their properties to flood say their complaints are being ignored.

    Several families living alongside the College Park estate insist the flooding started when the new homes were built more than two years ago.

    The development has a drainage pond that water runs into and gradually seeps away.

    Developers Bloor Homes and Redrow insist the drainage scheme, which was approved by the Environment Agency, was working as it should but it would investigate further.

  13. Hospital bed blocking scheme sees problems increasepublished at 08:43

    Health bosses have apologised after a scheme designed to reduce the rate of hospital bed blocking saw figures soar.

    In April 2014, health organisations in Cornwall started to share resources in the hope of cutting bed blocking by 25%. But the latest figures show the number of bed days lost has increased by 69% in a year.

    A health campaigner said the new initiative, launched under the government's Better Care Fund, could turn out to be "useless".

  15. Man rescued from flood - in Deep Lanepublished at 08:26

    A man has been rescued from a car after it got stuck in two feet of flood water, external - in Deep Lane.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service crews from Tolvaddon, Falmouth and Penzance were deployed to the road near Four Lanes just before 21:00 last night.

    A full water rescue team helped the driver from his car - he wasn't injured.

  16. Tom Allin: Devon bowler dies aged 28published at 08:14

    A former county cricketer from Devon has died at the age of 28, prompting a flood of tributes from within the game.

    Fast bowler Tom Allin played for Warwickshire as well as Devon. He was found dead on the A39 River Torridge Bridge on Monday night - the police say it was a "non-suspicious incident".

    Allin is the second cricketer to die in a matter of days, following the death of Sussex bowler Matthew Hobden at the age of 22.
