    A team of injured military veterans who are building a brand new Cornish pilot gig have asked for the public's help to name it.

    This is the vessel in its early stages - now it's nearing completion, the group behind it have started an appeal on Facebook, external to find a fitting name.

    The boat will be officially launched in Falmouth next month. It will then be rowed to the Isles of Scilly by a Help for Heroes, external crew for the World Pilot Gig Championships.

    Cornish restaurants have raised more than £3,000 for local homeless charities.

    Several took part in the StreetSmart campaign, which added an optional one pound charge onto customer's bills during November and December. All of the money raised will stay in Cornwall.

  5. Council looks at special educational needs workpublished at 13:50

    Cornwall Council is considering whether its special educational needs provision is fit for purpose.

    The council is looking at capacity and the range of services, and has identified autism as an area that needs enhancing.

    About 2,000 children and young people are diagnosed as having special educational needs in the county.

    Two women have been rescued from a burning building in Ilfracombe, firefighters say, external

    Four crews were called to the home in Northfield Road at about 00:40 after the fire started in the lounge. They rescued an elderly woman first, quickly followed by a younger woman.

    The pair were treated by ambulance crews for the effects of breathing in smoke. An investigation is under way into the cause, Devon and Somerset Fire Service said.

    The first driver in Devon and Cornwall to be prosecuted under new drug-driving legislation has been ordered to pay more than £1,000.

    Mark Mitchell, 35, of Grassmere Way, Saltash, pleaded guilty to driving his BMW while over the prescribed drug limit on the A388 at Callington on 3 December 2015.

    Bodmin Magistrates banned Mitchell from driving for 12 months and ordered him to pay a fine of £900, a victim surcharge of £90 and costs of £85.

    Seventy workers from Devon's Appledore Shipbuilders, almost half the workforce, have been transferred to Babcock's sister yard at Devonport.

    A statement from Babcock says they have provided opportunities for workers at other sites because of a dip in workload, adding: "We remain focused in our efforts to successfully secure future work for the yard." 

    Conservative MP Geoffrey Cox said: "Appledore and Babcock are making enormous efforts with the assistance of the government to find alternative work streams."

    Proposals for £12m of cuts and a 4% council tax rise will be voted on by Torbay Councillors today.

    One main sticking point is elected Mayor Gordon Oliver's plans to save £60,000 by closing Connections Offices, external in Torquay and Brixham, where people get help with things such as housing benefit and council tax.  

    There is concern that plans to reduce the service to one day a week will have an impact on vulnerable people. An office in Paignton would remain open full-time.

    The prospect of a controversial parliamentary constituency incorporating parts of both Cornwall and Devon is now back on the table.

    The Boundary Commission has started to redraw constituency boundaries and reduce the number of seats – which will mean two fewer MPs in the South West.

    Similar plans drawn up in 2013 – but ultimately rejected by the Liberal Democrats in the coalition government – proposed a new cross-border seat based on the towns of Bideford, Bude and Launceston.
