    Foundations have been laid for the first of 5,000 new houses at Sherford, on the outskirts of Plymouth. 

    The developers denied they were not keeping people well enough informed about building work and road closures.

    A man has been arrested after a grandmother and her baby grandson were injured during a street robbery in Plymouth, police say, external.

    The woman, in her 70s, was pushing her grandson in a pram when it's alleged her handbag was pulled from her, causing her and the pram to fall. Both sustained minor injuries.

    A 20-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released on bail, officers said.

    CCTV footage has been released showing police treatment of 32-year-old Thomas Orchard who died after he was restrained with a belt at Heavitree Road police station in Exeter.

    Bristol Crown Court heard he was handcuffed, held down and had a large fabric restraint belt put across his face. He died in hospital seven days later.

    The prosecution allege the use of the belt was "disproportionate" and "unjustified". Officers maintain it was "lawful", "proportionate" and "necessary"  

    Custody sergeant Jan Kingshott, 44, and civilian detention officers Simon Tansley, 38, and Michael Marsden, 55, deny manslaughter. The trial continues.

    - Westbound traffic into St Austell is tailed back to St Blazey on the A390 at Holmbush, near temporary traffic lights. 

    - The A38 has fully reopened between Doublebois and Dobwalls after an earlier accident, but there are still delays in the area. 

    In Devon, there's a broken down lorry on the A30 at the Alphington junction to Exeter. Traffic is also very heavy from roundabout on A377 heading into the city.

    - In Plymouth, on Fort Austin Avenue there are reports of an accident.

    - In Exeter on Topsham Road a collision is also causing problems

    A shipyard which builds Royal Navy vessels has seen 70 workers transferred to another site because of a shortage of work, unions say.

    Almost half of the workforce from Appledore Shipbuilders in north Devon have been transferred down to Babcock's sister yard at Devonport, Plymouth. 

    Heathcliffe Pettifer, from the Unite union said: "Regardless of the arrangements around work, if an order was announced tomorrow we're still looking at a blip which means that more than 100 people are likely to be transferred by the end of March."

    In Cornwall, the A38 has been affected between Doublebois and Dobwalls by an accident. It is passable in both directions with delays.

    - On the A390 Grenville Road in Lostwithiel, there are temporary traffic lights due to roadworks. Traffic is slow moving.

    - In Leedstown, there are reports Fraddam Road is partially blocked due to accident near Calloose Lane East.

    - On Bridge Road in Exeter, between Countess Wear and Matford, there are roadworks and traffic is slow moving. Traffic is also heavy on Sannerville Way.

    - There is slow moving traffic on the A38 at Kennford, heading towards Exeter.

  12. Emergency crews deal with fire involving gas cylinderspublished at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2016

    Emergency crews have been called to a fire involving gas cylinders in mid Cornwall.

    The blaze broke out in a single-storey farm building at Two Burrows, in Blackwater, at about 21:30 on Wednesday. One nearby property was evacuated and an adjacent road was closed.

    The incident has been scaled down, but two crews and a welfare vehicle remain on the scene to monitor the situation while the gas cylinders cool down.
