    Nearly 60% of 18 to 44-years-olds in the South West are being forced to delay careers, marriage and children because of housing problems and shortages, new research shows.

    The Shelter and YouGov study of adults under 45 was carried out as part of the charity's Great Home Debate. Of those, 59% said they believed "housing issues will delay me from reaching milestones, by the time I come to end of my life".

    Of the survey of 226 people in May, about 15% of people in relationships said they had postponed marriage or expected to do so. And 24% in relationships said they had put off having children, or expecting to, because of a lack of stable housing. Many also said they felt retirement was slipping out of reach, with 9% saying they thought it would be delayed because of housing.

    Proposals for more than 300 new pitches for gypsies and travellers in Cornwall by 2030 are part of work "looking at the future needs of the travelling community", a senior councillor says

    The council must provide suitable, well managed sites for residential and transit purposes, including a network of emergency stopping places. A public consultation period, external finishes today to get views on current proposals before the authority sets out its Gypsy and Travelling Communities Site Allocations Plan. 

    Edwina Hannaford, portfolio holder for planning at Cornwall Council, said: "We'll be looking at the future needs of the travelling community, and looking at where they should be placed. There is, I understand, a particularly strong need in west Cornwall."

    Approximately 50 police officers and specialists were deployed to 24 locations in Devon and Cornwall in an operation to target modern slavery, external

    Two people were arrested for modern slavery and money laundering offences and two for immigration offences. The suspects have been released on bail.

    The work was part of a pan-European week of action on modern slavery with five police forces from across the South West working together.

    • Between Goonhavern and Rejerrah on the A3075 there's slow traffic westbound.
    • Around Cheriton Bishop, on the A30 Exeter-bound the road is now clear after an earlier jack-knifed trailer. Traffic is starting to ease.   
  8. Final D-Day service takes place in Torquaypublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 6 June 2016

    The final memorial service has taken place in Torquay to commemorate those who fought and died on D-Day. 

    Earlier veterans paraded to the town's war memorial where the event was held. During the ceremony Nigel Sarjent and Ken Taylor, who both landed at Normandy in 1944, were presented with the Legion d'Honneur medal.

    As two people are arrested for modern slavery and money laundering offences in Devon, Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer, has urged people who suspect slavery is happening in their area to come forward.

    He said: “Victims may not regard themselves as being exploited, and are often reluctant to talk to police."

    Ch Supt Jim Colwell said: “Modern slavery comes in different forms which includes labour exploitation. The priority for the police in the first instance is to safeguard victims. We also seek to disrupt criminal activity associated with modern slavery and prosecute those responsible where possible.” Police said three potential victims had been found and were being supported.

    A former physiotherapist for Exeter City FC has spent £65,000 amassing a collection of hundreds of match-worn Wales tops.

    Fifty-one-year-old superfan Simon Shakeshaft (pictured above aged 11, wearing his favourite kit in 1977 (l), and (r) today), said his collection, which includes 350 tops has allowed him to - literally - sometimes stand in his heroes' boots.

    The idea started in 1991, when a relative gave him a match-worn club shirt. His Wales collection did not really kick off until 2001, when he got his hands on a John Hartson shirt and it began to scale up in 2004.

    Three potential victims of modern slavery have been discovered after police and other agencies visited nail bars and car washes in Devon last week, Devon and Cornwall Police say.

    Three Vietnamese people - an adult male and female, and a male suspected to be under 18 - were discovered last week and were being supported by the UK Human Trafficking Centre "which ensures that victims receive appropriate help and support", officers said. 

    Two people were arrested for modern slavery and money laundering offences and two for immigration offences. They were later released on bail. The work was part of a pan-European week of action on modern slavery.

    Penzance's Jubilee outdoor swimming pool has reopened after "too much sunshine" caused its closure on Friday.

    The sun caused algal blooms in the water. The algae itself was harmless but affected visibility, meaning lifeguards were unable to see the bottom of the pool. 

    Saltwater from the pool has now been replaced.

    Supt Ian Drummond-Smith of Devon and Cornwall Police, said plans were in place "both locally and nationally" about policing the tournament.

    He added officers were working closely "with partner agencies, bars, pubs and social clubs to help them prepare for the tournament and make them aware of both their responsibilities, but also where they can turn for advice".
