  2. Leave it to Beaver: New kits born on River Otterpublished at 17:52

    Beavers which were reported to have left an east Devon river last year have given birth to kits.

    The animals are living on the River Otter in East Devon and are part of a beaver reintroduction pilot being carried out by the Devon Wildlife Trust. The trust was granted a five-year licence by Natural England in January 2015 to manage the pilot.

    New video has been released of a beaver and a kit. The trust said the latest arrivals were an encouraging sign and suggested their return to the wild was going well. 

    Beavers were hunted to extinction in England and Wales during the 12th Century, but a family of wild beavers was spotted in 2014.

  3. Janet Kipling 'back home' on BBC Radio Devon as permanent lunchtime presenterpublished at 17:47

    Janet Kipling has been appointed the new permanent lunchtime presenter on BBC Radio Devon.

    Janet, who took over from Bill Buckley earlier this year, returns to the station full-time after first appearing on the station in 1993 as a reporter, producer and then presenter of the Afternoon Show.

    She said: "I’m delighted to be coming home... I still believe in the basics; encouraging people to share their experiences, stories and opinions about life in Devon, getting stuck in to intelligent debate about the big stories of the day, celebrating the good things in life, and having a laugh at the little things whenever we can along the way."

    Any remaining outbreaks of rain will soon clear this evening and winds will ease, leaving much of the night drier with clear spells. However, it will turn rather cloudy for all by dawn, with rain once again likely across western parts. Minimum temperature: 12C (54F).

    Wednesday will remain rather cloudy with rain - sometimes heavy, especially across higher ground such as moors - spreading across all parts and persisting throughout the day. It will turn rather breezy again, especially around the coast. Maximum temperature: 16C (61F).

    Plymouth-born basketball player Anthony Rowe has been forced to retire from the sport through injury.

    The thirty-year-old former Raiders captain has spent the last four years with Leicester Riders but has had to undergo three operations on his knee.

  7. Measles outbreak hits 13 pupils at Devon schoolpublished at 17:17

    Thirteen cases of measles and another 10 probable cases have been found at a secondary school.

    Parents at King Edward VI Community College in Totnes, Devon, have been urged to get their children vaccinated. 

    The outbreak was confirmed by Public Health England. 

    It warned that while most people who catch measles recover within weeks, it can cause permanent disability and "occasionally even kill".

  8. Tractor collison motorcyclist diespublished at 17:09

    A motorcyclist who was involved in a road collision with a tractor has died, police say, external.

    The crash happened on the A3047 near Camborne at about 07:40. The man who was riding the motorcycle was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with "serious injuries" but was later pronounced dead.

    The road was closed in both directions while officers examined the scene. It was re-opened at 13:30.

  9. Judge retires to consider online bomb hoaxes verdictpublished at 17:01 BST 28 June 2016

    A district judge has retired to consider her verdict in the case against a 16-year-old boy from Plymouth accused of sending bomb hoaxes online to two American airlines.

    In summing up at Plymouth Youth Court, the prosecution said the case has been proved beyond reasonable doubt. But the defence said it was terribly unfair and that an enormous weight had been put on the boy. The teenager was 15 at the time of alleged offences. 

    A judgement is due next Wednesday.

  10. New consultation into North Devon Link Road improvementspublished at 16:52

    An online consultation on how to improve the North Devon Link Road has been launched.

    Devon County Council said it was investigating options for upgrading the route after being allocated £1.5m from the Department for Transport to develop a business case.

    Two preferred options were mentioned in the consultation, it said, both of which would "improve traffic flow to reduce journey times between the M5 and northern Devon". One would cost £35m and the other £150m. The consultation, external is open until Friday.

  11. Kingsbridge hockey player Ansley makes Olympic squadpublished at 16:41 BST 28 June 2016

    Kingsbridge hockey player Giselle Ansley has been selected to play for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

    The 24-year-old will be competing in her first games, after being part of the England side which won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

    Ansley was also part of the England team which won last year's European Championships.  

  12. Village school closure and site move is 'only remaining possibility'published at 16:29 BST 28 June 2016

    A consultation is under way to move a Devon village school because it is the "only remaining possibility" to keep the institution open, the chairman of its governors says.

    Tipton St John Primary School, which has about 90 pupils, has been in the village for more than 200 years. Governors are consulting on moving it to nearby Ottery St Mary after repeated flooding. Parents said they feared they would be living in a "museum village" if it closed as it was "the heart of the community".

    The governors applied to the government for £3.5m to relocate the school within the village but this was rejected. Chairman of governors John Sherwood said the plans were under consideration because of "having exhausted every option".

  13. Kayakers escorted back to shorepublished at 16:15

    The St Agnes lifeboat has been launched after a group of kayakers were reported to be in difficulty.

    A member of the public contacted coastguards to say two of the kayakers had capsized. 

    The group was escorted back to Trevaunance Cove safely and there were no casualties.

  14. Police try to trace 'dog walker involved in Islamic Centre racial abuse'published at 16:00

    Police in Plymouth are trying to trace a man believed to be involved in hurling racial abuse at an Islamic Centre in Plymouth.

    Officers said, external a 45-year-old man had been arrested and released on bail after the incident at the Plymouth Islamic Education Trust in Greenbank Avenue at about 00:45 on Sunday 12 June, which saw a "number of the members, including women and children to racial abuse as they left the premises".

    Officers are trying to find a second man thought to be involved who left before police arrived. He was described as white, aged 35-45, between 5ft 6ins-5ft 8ins tall, of chubby build, with a local accent, and wearing a baseball cap and dark clothing.

    He was "believed to be local to the St Judes and Lipson area as he was walking his small brown dog during the time the incident took place".

    Outbreaks of rain arriving in the west will spread further eastwards, becoming locally heavy for a time, before clearing eastwards this afternoon and becoming brighter again by evening. South to southwesterly winds will become fresh to strong, before veering to the northwest and perhaps briefly touching gale-force in gusts around the coast. Maximum temperature: 18C (64F).

    Tonight, it'll be dry at first, with patchy cloud and some clear spells. But cloud will increase again and rain will spread from the west by morning, becoming locally heavy again in places. Winds will become moderate or fresh and increasing occasionally becoming strong. Minimum temperature: 12C (54F).

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist collided with a tractor in Cornwall.

    The crash happened on the A3047 near Camborne at about 07:40. The man who was riding the motorcycle was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with "serious injuries".

    Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police on 101 or by emailing 101@dc.police.uk, external, quoting log number 0135 of 28 June.

    Plymouth Argyle left-back Ben Purrington has signed a new contract with the League Two side.

    The 20-year-old made 16 appearances last season, including seven starts and nine as substitute.

    He made his Pilgrims debut on Boxing Day 2013 after coming through the Devon side's youth system, and has also played games in a midfield role. 

  18. British Passport Office 'unable to impose deadlines' on Peru governmentpublished at 14:47 BST 28 June 2016

    The British Passport Office is "unable to impose deadlines" on foreign governments so it can issue a passport for the children of a Devon pensioner who have been in South America for more than a decade.

    Sixty-five-year-old William Drummond fled with his wife and children from war-torn Venezuela in 2002, where he says they'd been held at gunpoint and feared for their lives. They made it as far as Peru but complications in getting UK passports for his children has meant they're still in South America 11 years on. He hasn't seen them for five years after returning to the UK to fight for the documents.

    The Passport Office said it "cannot issue a passport until all necessary checks have been satisfactorily completed. Where applications involve requesting a response from overseas authorities around checks on supporting documents, timescales are dependant on how quickly those authorities respond."
