  2. Recycling collectors fall ill from unwashed bottlespublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Some recycling collectors in West Devon have become ill after handling unwashed bottles.

    An incident took place at the council's operational waste depot, when recycling banks were emptied and their contents crushed before being sent for recycling.

    When the bank was emptied and the bottles were crushed a combination of different liquids merged and produced a gas.   

    The emergency services were called to investigate the gases and treat the workers.

    Four police officers have been recognised for their bravery after tackling a man with an angle grinder in Kingsbridge.

    They were honoured at the Police Bravery awards in London last night for risking their lives to bring the armed siege to an end.

    Cornwall's Sammie Giles has won the English women's amateur championship at West Lancashire and completed a full set of national titles.

    She has already won the English women's stroke play, played last year on another Lancashire course at St Annes Old Links, and she captured the English women's mid-amateur at Bath in 2014.

    The 21-year-old from St Mellion scored one-under par over 72 holes.

    She said: "This one is the most important because it's the closed championship and you're playing against all your England team-mates."

    Construction is said to be booming in the South West with some in the industry saying it's experiencing the second highest growth rate in the UK.

    Industry experts anticipate 6,500 jobs will be created each year for the next four years.

    Seven dog control signs have been torn off walls and railings at Westward Ho! beach.

    The signs advise residents and visitors of the exclusion of dogs from certain parts of Westward Ho! beach during May to September each year.

    Councillor Peter Le Maistre, ward member for Westward Ho!, said: "I really fail to understand the mindless destruction and lack of consideration for other people that some people demonstrate through acts such as this.

    "It is not as though there is a complete ban on dog walking, but it would seem that some people are selfish enough to want to claim the whole beach for themselves rather than share it in a managed and more inclusive way. If anyone has any information on how this occurred we would like them to contact the council."

    Plymouth Albion have signed hooker Jamie Salter for the third time after he left Cornish side Launceston.

    The 31-year-old missed much of last season after having an operation on a detached bicep, and could not prevent Launceston from being relegated.

    "I really enjoyed my time at Polson Bridge but I want to play at the highest level possible," Salter said. "I live in Plymouth and am looking forward to challenging for a place in Albion's front row."

    A teenager injured after falling 15ft (4.6m) off a harbour wall said she "freaked out" when a seagull tried to snatch her ice-cream.

    Shop worker Joanne Rich, 18, was sitting on Smeaton's Pier in St Ives, Cornwall, on Tuesday afternoon when the gull swooped. 

    She said: "The only way I felt I could get away was to go forward, I didn't actually realise how high it was."

    She was airlifted to hospital with back injuries.  

  14. Call for average speed cameras on South Devon Highwaypublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    There's been a call for average speed cameras to be put on the new South Devon Highway.

    Research shows that on average most drivers are exceeding the speed limit by about 15mph.

    Alistair Dewhurst, a Liberal Democrat councillor in Teignbridge, is calling for speed cameras to be introduced.

    A couple from Cornwall who founded a national initiative to help child victims of domestic abuse have attended a reception at Clarence House.

    Operation Encompass which began in Torpoint has since been adopted by police forces across the country.

    Liz and David Carney-Howarth were invited to the event by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall as part of her work to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

    At least 84 people are dead after a lorry ploughs through packed crowds gathered for Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, southern France.

    A new seafront refreshment kiosk in Paignton has been condemned as 'looking like a cuckoo clock' and being out of keeping with the Victorian architecture of the town.

    The wooden hut which was apparently previously used in a Christmas market, is being erected on the seafront next to the Victorian shelters
