    A falling waiting list means now is a good time to apply for an allotment in Exeter, the city council has said.

    The number of people waiting for an allotment in Exeter reduced from 804 in the summer of 2015 to just 131 in February. The reduction has been down to a quicker turnaround of vacant sites and the dividing up of plots to make them more manageable for first-time growers said the council.

    Planners have given the green light to the application to build offices and two rows of industrial units at the entrance to the Marine Industries Production Campus in Devonport.

    The two and three-storey buildings will offer flexible office and workshop space arranged in parallel "to reflect the historic nature of South Yard as well as the street pattern just outside the boundaries" said the council.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to an attack which took place outside the Golden Lion Tap Inn, off the Square in Barnstaple.

    A 38-year-old man from Barnstaple suffered injuries to his face in the assault by three men on Sunday at 21:20 BST.

    The men were all white, and all had beards, but police have no more accurate description beyond this. Police are asking anyone with any information that could help with their investigation to email 101@dc.police.uk or call 101 quoting crime reference CR/068168/16.

    Surfers from Devon and Cornwall are gearing up for the first UK Pro Surf Tour event at the artificial wave site Surf Snowdonia.

    Surf Snowdonia on 24 October 24 will see the UK’s top male, female and junior surfers compete in a knock-out competition.

    Dave Reed, director of UK Pro Surf Tour said: “The event opens a new door for the direction of competitive surfing. The wave that the medium surfers will compete on is the same, the element of luck will be eliminated from competition. Allowing a pure judgement on performance.”

    Cornwall Council cabinet member for planning Edwina Hannaford said: “There are no surprises here and crucially, the Inspector accepts that the overall housing target of 52,500 new homes to be built is sound.   

    "As at April of this year, 36,000 of this total number already have planning permission or have been built so we are looking at an additional 16,500 new homes by 2030."

    Older people are more likely to take medical risks than younger adults if they perceive the benefits to be high enough, according to new research led by Plymouth University.

    Researchers say the findings challenge the traditional view of older people being risk adverse.

    Yaniv Hanoch, Professor of Decision Science said: "Beliefs about the elderly taking fewer risks are based mainly on financial risk-taking studies that do confirm elderly people’s financial risk aversion. However, older adults do not seem to be as generally averse to taking risks as that literature on financial risk-taking suggests."

    Police in Exeter have released the image of a man they wish to identify as they believe he may have witnessed a crime involving a suspected firearm in the city centre.

    Det Con Mark Nagle, said a man was seen pointing what was believed to be a handgun at a passer-by on 16 September in Bampfylde Street.

    “We managed to detain both suspects later that night and located an imitation firearm. These two men are now on police bail pending further enquiries.

    “We have released the image of a man we would like to speak to as we believe he was in the area at the time, and may have witnessed this incident. He is not a suspect, and we believe the information he holds could be vital to our investigation.

  14. Human remains belong to 'unknown man'published at 15:01 British Summer Time 27 September 2016

    Human remains found in Newquay belong to "an unknown man", police have said.

    The remains were found in the area of Tregurrian on 11 August. Initial formal identification proved inconclusive and the remains were then sent off for specialist DNA testing.  

    The laboratory has since confirmed that the human bones found in the area are not those of Chad Gibson (pictured below), who is missing from St Austell. His family have been told.

    The missing person investigation for Chad "will continue to be reviewed on a regular basis", the force said.

    Further comparisons will now be made on the National Missing Person’s Database in a bid to identify the remains.

    A Plymouth design student is making her mark on the city’s newest college after winning a competition to design its new logo.

    Melissa Noble was one of a group of second year design students at Plymouth University who were set the challenge of coming up with a new brand identity for Scott Medical and Healthcare College.

    The initial group of six logo designs were narrowed down to three which were then judged by a number of focus groups and students at Stoke Damerel Community College - which is sponsoring the new college. Melissa was crowned the winner and fellow student Dan Patterson the runner-up.
