    A loggerhead turtle who achieved national fame has died.

    Snorkel had been a resident of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, external for more than 15 years.

    The turtle had numerous health problems including epilepsy and a shell deformity and hit the headlines in 2011 when he was taken to hospital in Cheltenham for an MRI scan.

    It will be mainly dry with clear spells this evening. However, further showers will develop overnight with more persistent rain following, turning heavy for a time later.

    The shooting of a peregrine falcon follows "long history of persecution" in the Teignbridge area, the RSPB has said.

    Tony Whitehead, speaking for the RSPB in the south west, said: “We know that Devon has long been a bird of prey persecution black spot and the area where these birds were found has seen five such incidents over the past 25 years alone. We need to stop this."

    Police have released advice about how to spot a fake £50 note after two counterfeit notes were found in Newton Abbot.

    • Genuine notes feature a series of green rectangles (the visible part of thread) which contains the '£' symbol and the number 50. Movement can be seen when the note is tilted. In the counterfeit notes these are just green printed squares
    • Genuine notes feature a watermark which contains a picture of the Queen with a bright £50. The counterfeit notes appear to contain a watermark but there is no contrast between the Queen and £50
    • Genuine notes feature raised print 'Bank of England' text across the note and also the lower right corner. The counterfeits do not have raised print
  7. Citizens Advice Exeter deals with 22% more welfare benefit enquiries than in 2015published at 16:53 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    The local charity Citizens Advice Exeter has dealt with 22% more welfare benefit claims in the first five months of the financial year, compared to the same period last year.

    Chief executive Steve Barriball said: “We are regularly seeing people who end up in debt as a result of poor administration by the welfare benefits or tax credits systems.

    "This highlights the urgent need to address failings in the benefits system.”

    The advice trends over the period were as follows:

    • Overall, the charity dealt with 14% more debt enquiries.

    Around 100 motorcyclists have been flooding the streets of Barnstaple this afternoon - to mark the death of a local bike enthusiast, who's died after a short battle with cancer. 

    Sixty-six-year-old Dennis Pilon was a keen member of the North Devon British Motorcycle Owners Club and many of the clubs members organised today's convoy, to follow the funeral procession through the centre of Barnstaple.

    The shooting of a falcon near Ipplepen is "incredibly hard to investigate" as often there are no witnesses, police have said.

    Cornwall’s police wildlife crime officer Josh Marshall said: "It is clear that someone in the local community will hold the key to what has taken place.

    “This peregrine falcon will have been shot by someone having a clear motive to destroy this rare bird of prey.  

    "The community in this area need to be aware of this incident and every effort should be made to bring the offender to justice."

    The Friends of the Edward Hain Hospital in St Ives have said if the hospital's not reopened soon it risks being gone forever.

    Managers have said £650,000 is needed to make the building safe, and there's no guarantee the NHS will come up with the money, meaning local people may need to foot the bill themselves.

    The chair of friends Chris Cocklin has told BBC Radio Cornwall up to £400,000 is held in trusts and bonds and they will do all it takes to make sure inpatient beds at the community hospital in the town reopens.

    Teignbridge District Council has appointed a contractor to remove the dead fin whale washed ashore at a beach near Dawlish.

    Firefighters helped to free two young children from a car after they had become locked in.

    They were called to Dunmere Road, in Bodmin at about 12:15.

    Crews gained entry to the vehicle through a front window, releasing the children, who were not injured.

    Police are investigating the shooting of a peregrine falcon in south Devon.

    The bird of prey was found near Ipplepen on 23 August with an injury to its wing.

    A £1,000 reward has been offered by the RSPB after an examination revealed that the animal had been shot with an air rifle pellet causing fractures to its wing. 

    This incident is now subject to a police investigation and wildlife crime officer Josh Marshall is appealing to anyone who has information that will help them in finding the offenders.

    A group called the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway Company is working with Cornwall Council to try and find a way to bring steam trains back to Wadebridge. They're working up a plan to widen cuttings, improve road crossings and build bridges in five places so that cyclists and trains can share the route.

    The Bodmin and Wenford Railway reaches Boscarne Junction at the moment which is five miles from Wadebridge. The last train left Wadebridge in 1978. Hear more about this story in the BBC Radio Cornwall breakfast programme on Saturday.

    A holidaymaker and his dog have died after getting into difficulty in the sea in Cornwall, while a diver died and two others were hurt in a separate incident.

    • A lifeboat crew pulled the man, named locally as Trevor Priest, 63, from the water near Dunderhole Point, Tintagel, on Tuesday afternoon
    • Mr Priest, from near Stratford-upon-Avon, is thought to have gone into the water after his dog 
    • He died later in hospital, said police
    • Meanwhile a 67-year-old man died following a diving accident at Porthkerris, near St Keverne
    • The diver, from Brentwood, Essex, was recovered unconscious from the water and airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was later pronounced dead
    • Two other divers were taken to Plymouth for specialist recompression treatment after a rapid ascent in the sea on Saturday

    Financial pressures are mounting at Britain's first new metals mine for a generation, which is just outside Plymouth.

    Wolf Minerals, which runs the new tungsten mine at Hemerdon, has had to suspend trading of its shares on the Australian stock exchange over concerns about cash flow.

    The mine is still working and industry watchers believe it should be able to sort its finances out because the outlook for tungsten is good. 

    But local MP Gary Streeter says it's crucial that it gets an extension to its planning consent. 

    He's worried that if Wolf were forced to mothball the mine, it could end up being sold on to a less sympathetic operator.

    A whale carcass washed up on a beach near Dawlish has "attracted a lot of attention", Teignbridge District Council has said.

    "It’s a sad sight and many people are being very respectful," he said.

    A 67-year-old diver died on Saturday after diving at Porthkerris, St Keverne, Cornwall.

    The coastguard, inshore lifeboat, and police were called and he was recovered unconscious from the water at about 12.50. 

    The man, from Brentwood, Essex, was airlifted to Treliske Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. 

    Two other divers were also taken by ambulance to Derriford Hospital, but released the same day following recompression treatment.
