    Police said emergency services were called to Tolcarne Beach in Newquay at about 12:10.

    Officers said: "An investigation is now underway and enquiries ongoing."

    Debut author KJ Orr has won the BBC national short story award for Disappearances, beating Devon author and double Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel.

    The £15,000 prize was presented to London-born Orr by Woman's Hour's Dame Jenni Murray at a ceremony in London. Author and judge Kei Miller described Disappearances as "a near perfect example of how the short story works".

    The story about guilt and identity was inspired by Orr watching a solitary man in a cafe while in Argentina. It tells the tale of a retired plastic surgeon who develops a relationship with a local waitress.

    Cancer care in Torbay and South Devon is among the best in the country, according to an NHS survey published today.

    The NHS England review said most areas were failing to meet targets for early diagnosis, for patients surviving at least a year, and for emergency referrals being treated within 62 days.

    However, it highlighted South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group as one of the nation's best performers. The rest of Devon was rated as "needs improvement".

    This year's Children in Need Appeal has been launched today.

    The charity is currently funding 80 projects in the South West that are helping disadvantaged children and young people. Last year more than £1m was raised in the region on the night of the telethon. 

    This year it's on Friday 18 November; but pupils and staff at Kea School, near Truro, have already started to get ready after appeal mascot Pudsey visited this morning.

    Islanders on Scilly are angry they're having to pay hundreds of pounds to ship green waste on to the mainland. 

    Until 2014, the island's waste was incinerated or landfilled in situ. But new emission rules have closed the plants down.

    It means all waste now comes over to Cornwall at a cost about £500 a tonne.

  10. Fisherman's Friends death trial: Company had 'casual approach to safety'published at 12:16 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    The company which installed a two-tonne door which resulted in the deaths of a member of Cornish shanty group the Fisherman's Friends and their tour manager had a "rather casual approach to safety", prosecutors have told a court.

    Singer Trevor Grills, 54, from Port Isaac, and tour manager Paul McMullen, 44, from Cheshire, died after being hit by a falling door at G Live in Guildford on 9 February 2013 as they unloaded for a concert due that evening.

    The prosecution at Guildford Crown Court alleges David Naylor's (below) company, Express Hi-Fold Doors Ltd, made slight changes to an American design, and it was not an unforeseen accident. 

    The prosecution said "the door collapsed as both chains connecting the motor and gear box to a drive shaft, failed". Mr Naylor, 57, from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, denies two counts of manslaughter by gross negligence. The trial continues.

    Exeter City Council's planning committee will discuss an application for the multi-million pound redevelopment of Exeter's bus station site later. 

    Councillors will be asked to approve the plan for the £26m St Sidwell's leisure complex and £6.25m new Exeter bus station. 

    If planning permission is granted, work is due to begin on site next spring.

    A two-tonne door which dropped and resulted in the deaths of a member of Cornish shanty group the Fisherman's Friends and their tour manager fell without warning and had no anti-drop safeguard, a court has heard.

    Fifty-four-year-old singer Trevor Grills, from Port Isaac, and tour manager Paul McMullen, from Cheshire, died after they were hit by a falling door at G Live in Guildford in February 2013. The group had been due to perform.   

    The prosecution at Guildford Crown Court also told the jury that doors made by Express Hi-Fold Doors Ltd had fallen before.  

    David Naylor, 57, from Bridgnorth, Shropshire - director of Express Hi-Fold Doors - denies two counts of manslaughter by gross negligence. The trial continues.

    Police in Cornwall are searching for a 14-year-old girl who has been missing since the weekend.

    Officers said, external Olivia Duggan was last seen in Liskeard at about 19:00 on Sunday and they were concerned for her welfare.

    She is described as white, about 5ft 1in tall, of slim build, with shoulder-length blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a black jeans, a short black crop top, a blue bomber jacket, and carrying a white leather rucksack.

    Premier League side Plymouth Devils has folded after financial problems.

    They were saved in March having almost gone out of business, but continued low attendances have meant it is no longer viable.

    "Unfortunately the necessity to liquidate has been brought about by another season of losses," promoter Ashley Taylor said in a statement. "In the previous three seasons the losses have been funded by the directors and shareholders, well in excess of a six-figure sum."

    A scheme in Devon where volunteers fill in potholes has been relaunched after it was branded "confusing and overly bureaucratic".

    Community Road Wardens are now fixing potholes in five trial areas. Those who've signed up have been sent on a two-day training course and have been given materials and equipment to carry out the minor road repairs. 

    Devon County Council said it had simplified the guidance for road wardens and now wanted more people to sign up.
