    A campaign is under way in Brixham to raise money for a statue for the town's fishermen.

    It's thought to be the only port in the country without such a monument. The statue has been made, but it's waiting to be bronzed at a foundry in Wales. 

    A group of fishermen's wives is now walking from Land's End back to Brixham in an attempt to raise the final £7,000.

    Ten out of 26 beds for mental health patients in a Cornwall psychiatric unit were being used unnecessarily, it has emerged.

    "At the time 26 patients were receiving care at Longreach House in Redruth," said a report into a fire safety alert in 2014.

    "When the patients were being assessed to see what facility they should be taken to, only 10 were deemed to need an acute bed."

    Dr Richard Laugharne, a consultant psychiatrist from the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, blamed the "prolonged time taken for funding assessments" which led to "inappropriately long stays in acute psychiatric wards for some patients with chronic needs".

    • In Cornwall, there is slow traffic on the A39 between Winnards Perch and the A389 becuase of resurfacing work 
    • On the St Mawes Passenger Ferry, there's no service from Custom House Quay today

    A Plymouth man has been charged with murdering a 26-year-old woman found stabbed in Bournemouth.

    Natasha Wake was found at a house in Harley Gardens on Sunday afternoon. She died from multiple stab wounds. Twenty-six-year-old Jay Nava is due to appear before Bournemouth Magistrates' Court later. 

    Police said Ms Wake and Mr Nava were known to each other. A cordon remains in place at the address while investigations into the attack continue.

    Devon looks set to be without a professional speedway club riding in the county after the Plymouth Devils announced they are going into liquidation.

    The Premier League side started racing again in the city a decade ago after an absence of 36 years, but are believed to have suffered losses in excess of £100,000. 

    Although liquidators have been called in, they have been informed there are interested parties wishing to put in a bid for the track.

    Verbal and physical assaults on ambulance staff in the South West have almost doubled in a year.

    South Western Ambulance Service chief executive Ken Wenman (pictured) said: "This time last year we would have had around 60 verbal or physical abuse or assaults on staff - they are now in the hundreds, around 105 so far this year.

    "When you have a trend where things are doubling at that rate they have to be things we take notice of.”

    • In Plymouth, Cobourg Street is closed outbound between Mayflower Street and Saltash Road for removal of a crane from a building site. Diversions are in place 
    • In Plymouth, traffic is slow-moving on the St Budeaux bypass, due to temporary traffic lights for roadworks on Saltash Road, near the junction with Wolseley Road 
    • In Plympton, there are temporary traffic lights for roadworks on Sandy Road, near A38 Deep Lane. Delays on the slip roads on and off the A38 
    • CrossCountry rail has a revised service between Exeter St Davids and its Plymouth and Paignton routes due to high tides at Dawlish. Tickets are being accepted on GWR services
    • In Cornwall, there's slow traffic on the A38 from the Trerulefoot roundabout, heading towards Plymouth

    Some ambulance call centre staff are too busy to record incidents of verbal abuse from callers, a report has said.

    Staff at South Western Ambulance Service (SWASFT) have been commended for their "outstanding professionalism" while being shouted at or threatened. 

    SWASFT was found to "require improvement" in two out of six areas, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) report said. 

    Verbal and physical assaults on staff have almost doubled in a year. SWASFT chief executive Ken Wenman said he thought the report was "fair".
