    An item of significant historical importance has been stolen from a church in South East Cornwall.

    The name plate from Bishop Trelawny's coffin has been taken from Pelynt Church, where it was on display.

    Bishop Trelawny, is the inspiration behind the famous song "Trelawny" - Cornwall's unofficial national anthem - for his role in the Revolution of 1688 - the Glorious Revolution. He led a group of Cornishmen to London in protest at the rule of Catholic King James II. He was buried at the church in 1721. 

    The plate was hanging in a frame on the wall, where it had been since the 1880s. Historians said it was "of value to everyone who loves Cornwall".

    Police in Plymouth are trying to to trace a 25-year-old Devonport man who is wanted for recall to prison.

    Officers said Tommy McTighe, originally charged with robbery and wounding in 2011, was wanted for failing to comply with licence conditions following his release from prison.

    He is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build, with short light-brown hair, and having a local accent. He still has connections to the Plymouth area, officers said.

    City had to make do without forwards Rory Fallon and Louis Rooney who were away on international duty, while Jack Smith was recalled from his loan spell by parent club Eastleigh and Cody Cooke was out injured.

    An opportunity to buy an Iron Age hill fort in Cornwall has been attracting interest from across the county, estate agents say.

    Caer Bran, near Sancreed, is for sale for an unspecified price and consists of 23 acres with the ancient monument at its heart.

    No development would be allowed because of the site's historical and scientific importance. However land agents said they believed people would be interested in buying it because it was a very special part of Cornwall's history.

    An estate agent from Devon who conned clients and friends out of a total of £157,000 has been given a suspended sentence of 20 months. 

    Russell Baker, 59, from Green Lane in Ilsington was also ordered to carry out 160 hours of community service. 

    He pleaded guilty to nine counts of fraud at an earlier hearing. Exeter Crown Court heard how he had "robbed Peter to pay Paul" but never repaid any of them. 

    Joss Tickhurst, defending, said Baker was full of remorse and that he accepted he was foolish and reckless, and that he planned to repay the money he owed by selling his home and land.

    Police in Cornwall say they will use laws to deal with antisocial behaviour or public order offences if people have been harrassed, alarmed or distressed by people wearing masks.

    Officers said they were looking into "reports of individuals wearing masks in the Torpoint area of the last few days". 

    Sightings of so-called "killer clowns" have been reported, external in a park and outside a vaping shop in the town.

    PC Wooldridge, from Torpoint Police, said on Facebook, external: "Whilst we understand people may see this as harmless fun, it may cause people harassment, alarm or distress and, if relevant, we may deal with this via public order offence's or anti social behaviour legislation if necessary."

    A man who died following a fire at a block of flats in Exeter has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be a 47-year-old, police say, external.

    Fire crews were called to Turnworth Court in Coombe Street, near the city centre, just before 17:00 on Sunday. The blaze was contained within a small part of the ground floor.

    Police said emergency services found the man inside the building and his family had been informed. 

    Investigations into the cause of the fire continue and the death was being treated as "unexplained", officers said.

    There's been a significant drop in the number of child arrests in the South West in the last five years, new figures show.

    The Howard League for Penal Reform said there was a 69% drop in Devon and Cornwall between 2010 and 2015. The charity puts it down to the removal of national targets, better police training and support from communities. 

    League chief executive Frances Crook said it was "gratifying" to have stemmed the flow of a "downward spiral into crime and custody".

    The first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender orchestra has been launched in the South West.

    Members had their first rehearsals at the weekend. About 30 people from different parts of the South West have participated, including friends from the straight community. 

    Organisers said they knew of only two other gay orchestras in the country. 

    They said one aim was to bring LGBT people together through music, especially those who may feel isolated because of the region's geography.

    A police car was allegedly stolen from a police station and driven 230 miles before being stopped on a motorway.

    Police said keys to the marked car were taken during a burglary at Camelford Police Station in Cornwall in the early hours of on Friday. The vehicle was later spotted heading east on the M4.

    A 23-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman from Camelford have been charged in connection with the incident.They are due to appear at Truro Crown Court in November.
