    Firefighters battled a blaze in a barn throughout the night.

    Crews were called just after 20:00 to Higher Green Cross, Slapton where a barn filled with straw was alight. 

    Crews from Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth, Torquay, Modbury and Plympton were called as they tried to protect farm buildings nearby. 

    At midnight the the incident was scaled down to two appliances and relief crews were sent from Buckfastleigh and Paignton.

    A £15,000 pay rise for Teignbridge District Council's chief executive is being described as excessive by opposition politicians. 

    Nicola Bulbeck's salary is up 12% on the previous year to £141,000 - making her the highest paid district council boss in Devon. 

    The Conservative leader of the council Jeremy Christophers says the increase reflects additional responsibilities she's taken on after the senior management team was cut from 18 to 6 posts. 

  3. Mitie 'rejects' scores which show 'service failures' resulted in finespublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Cleaning and catering contractor Mitie says it "rejects entirely" performance scores published by Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust which show that it lost most of its profits in fines.

    Every quarter these "service failure points" are published and the more points Mitie gets, the more of its profit margin the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust withholds.

    Cleaner

    A spokesperson said: "This is not an accurate representation of the service. The mechanism of the allocation of these service failure points is currently under review by the trust and they acknowledge that these are subject to change."

    They said the Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) audit scores is an independent review into the cleaning standards which "clearly show" that the cleanliness of the hospital is of a much higher standard now than when the trust was cleaning the hospital previously.

    Conviction rates for rape in Devon and Cornwall remain low, a new report has concluded. 

    The Rape Monitoring Group, which uses a range of official statistics, estimates about one in 20 recorded offences results in a guilty verdict. 

    But the police say they're doing all they can to support victims.

    Riders can hire and drop the bikes off at a number of sites across the city, similar to London's 'Boris Bikes' but with batteries. 

    The project was part funded by local councils and Co-bikes, the company behind them.

    It'll be mostly dry, but some showers are possible at times, perhaps more so near the coasts.

    Newquay Airport was evacuated for 20 minutes this morning following a fire alarm. 

    It was a false alarm and all flights left on time, the airport said.

  9. Exam board apologises after 11-plus exam resit 'mistake'published at 08:20 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Exam board GL Assessment has apologised for issues with the resit 11-plus exam which has been taken by hundreds of girls in Plymouth.

    The students had to retake both papers after allegations some children had seen the first set of exams before.

    But now the board has admitted there was a "mistake" in the English exam which they resat last Saturday - as it contained a passage which had already appeared in the mock exam. 

    It's apologised for any distress and says it was down to human error. It's confirmed further retests won't be necessary.

  10. Firefighters called to crash on A38published at 08:11 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Three fire crews have been called to a crash on the A38 between Deep Lane and Marsh Mills in Plymouth.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 07:11. Three appliances from Greenbank and Plymstock were sent.

    Fire crews said on arrival, everyone had left the vehicle.
