    A Romanian man caught smuggling nine people including children into the UK has been jailed for four years at Plymouth Crown Court.

    Mircea Sandu admitted illegally bringing in two families hidden in a lorry on a Brittany Ferries ship.

    Border guards found nine people including three children and a baby hidden on board the Armorique after sailing from Roscoff to Plymouth.

    Sandu, 31, who had been living in Spain, admitted facilitating illegal immigration into the UK on 9 October.

    We don't want to put you off your dinner but a kebab shop owner has been fined and banned from opening any other food business in the future, according to Cornwall Council.

    Environmental health officers found Ramazan Kaya "had let the standards slip quite dramatically over time" at Penzance Grill on Market Jew Street in Penzance and closed the restaurant.

    Cornwall Council said Kaya pleaded guilty on Monday at Truro Magistrates to food hygiene and licensing charges and was fined £2,750 with a £120.00 victim surcharge and full prosecuting costs of £1969.22 awarded to the council.    

  5. South West Water 'making improvements' after facing £1.7m finepublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    South West Water says it's "committed to making significant improvements" as it faces a £1.7m fine by watchdogs for allowing sewage to spill into the sea.

    The water firm said its performance "did not meet the stretching targets it set itself" and "progress is already being made" on improvements.

    Ofwat said that the company allowed sewage to spill into the sea seven times between April 2015 and March 2016. 

    It's now holding a consultation on the level and timing of the penalty which SWW has asked to be put off until 2019.

    Devon and Cornwall Police has confirmed the emergency response phase has ended following the fire in Exeter.

    In a tweet, officers confirmed Exeter City Council will take control of the recovery phase.

    NHS leaders said there was no wrongdoing by a senior manager who has resigned.

    Joy Youart was suspended as managing director at NHS Kernow earlier this year during an investigation into finances and the structure of health services in Cornwall.

    Chairman Dr Iain Chorlton said: "After much consideration Joy has decided she is not the right person to take the CCG forward" and "it was time for new challenges for her and a new leader for the CCG".

    Police are trying to trace two men in connection with a serious assault in Plymouth.

    A man was allegedly punched in the face during an unprovoked assault which took place outside the old Plymouth Snooker Club in Union Street, police said.

    The victim, a 26-year-old man, was treated at Derriford Hospital for serious facial injuries including a fractured eye socket.

    Detectives are keen to identify the two men pictured in connection with the incident on 11 September.

    Historic England said: "We are saddened by the fire affecting Exeter's Royal Clarence Hotel and the nearby buildings, many of which are listed at Grade II. 

    "These historic buildings at the heart of the city frame the cathedral and its green, creating one of the most powerful and historic pieces of townscape in the whole of the South West.

    "Our structural engineer and fire safety officer visited the site yesterday with Exeter City Council's building control department to assess the scale of the damage. 

    "We are working with the council to discuss the next steps, and are hoping to call in our experts to record what remains and see what can be salvaged."

    An armed robber who wore a 'killer clown' mask in raids has had his sentence increased by seven years.

    Oliver Leggatt was originally sentenced to nine years and nine months imprisonment by Exeter Crown Court for a number of offences including two robberies, an attempted robbery, possessing a knife and an imitation firearm. 

    Leggatt wore a 'killer clown' mask, threatened staff and stole thousands of pounds in a series of raids on Beefeater restaurants in south Devon. He planned the raids after harbouring a grudge when he was given the sack.

    After a referral by Attorney General Jeremy Wright, the Court of Appeal increased Leggatt's sentence to 16 years nine months.

    Mr Wright said after the case that Leggatt's former colleagues had been "subjected to a violent and extremely frightening ordeal". He said: "The original sentence failed to take proper account of the nature of the offence and the aggravating features of the case, so I am pleased the court has seen fit to impose a longer prison term."

    South West Water is facing up to a potential £1.7m fine from Britain's water regulator over "serious wastewater pollution incidents". 

    Ofwat said that the company allowed sewage to spill into the sea on seven different occasions between April 2015 and March 2016. It means South West Water - which provides services to customers throughout Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset - failed its own outcome delivery incentives (ODI) targets to eliminate all wastewater pollution incidents.

    Ofwat is now holding a consultation on the level and timing of the penalty. 

    South West Water has requested that the penalty be deferred until 2019 in the hope that it could be offset by ODI rewards for beating targets over the coming years.

    Flowers have been laid at the scene of a fatal house fire in Devon.

    Emergency services were called to the property on King Street, Newton Abbot yesterday afternoon and found a man with serious injuries. He later died. 

    Devon and Cornwall Police said the blaze was not being treated as suspicious.

    Joy Youart oversaw Cornwall's "Living Well" vision and strategy - a scheme designed to relieve pressure on GPs and hospitals. 

    She was on a salary of £150,000 a year. Ms Youart was suspended earlier this year during an investigation into finances and the structure of health services in Cornwall.

    In December, NHS England ordered NHS Kernow to produce a recovery plan as it was heading for a year-end deficit of £14m. 

    Now, Joy Youart has resigned saying she is not the right person to take cornwall's clinical commissioning group forward. NHS Kernow said there was no implication of any wrongdoing. 

  16. Fire having 'significant impact on Exeter Cathedral and businesses'published at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2016

    The Dean of Exeter says the devastating fire that ripped through the Royal Clarence Hotel is having a significant impact on the Cathedral and neighbouring businesses. 

    The Very Reverend Jonathan Draper has just returned from a trip away and has been assessing the damage for the first time. 

    It's not yet clear how long demolition work will take.

    Businesses on a busy stretch of the A39 in north Cornwall say they are losing thousands of pounds because of damage caused by cars crashing into their properties.

    A number of vehicles have crashed on a bend at Knights Mill near St Teath. 

    Cornwall Council says it plans to renew the road markings and signs but it is not on the list of the 200 worst accident blackspots. 

    Jamie Rix, who runs a fireplace shop which has been damaged, said: "Customers can't come in to see the products we sell and none of it is covered by insurance so it's a loss of earnings."

    Exeter Cathedral remains closed while work continues on the fire-hit Royal Clarence Hotel.

    The Chapter House is being used for regular services, but is closed outside of these times.

    The Cathedral Shop and Cathedral Café are also closed.

    The Wednesday Night Café, external for the homeless will take place at Crosslines, with food provided by Exeter Mosque, the Cathedral said.
