    Hope not hate poster at vigil

    A candlelight vigil was held in Great Torrington last night to show support for the young people being looked after at a reception centre in the town. 

    Around 20 people were moved to the town from the "Jungle" camp in Calais just over a fortnight ago. 

    Mayor Margaret Brown says she hopes the vigil will counter negative publicity.

    One man was rescued from the sinking vessel on Friday afternoon. 

    He made the Mayday call after his boat started taking on water at 13:45, when he was two nautical miles off Newquay.

    A rescue helicopter was called to the scene with lifeboats from the town. The man was rescued by a passing vessel which responded to the call. The boat was towed back to Newquay.

    A man flying a plane before a fatal crash had been a pilot for three years, a report says.

    Philip Garvey, 56, was flying his wife Ann, 55, their daughter Emily, 23 and son Daniel, 20 to Dunkeswell, in East Devon, from Fairoaks Airport in Surrey.

    He had flown to Dunkeswell 25 times since 2013, including 14 times from Fairoaks.

    His instructors told investigators he was "less able than average pilots at multi-tasking and poor at prioritising especially when under pressure". 

    Another instructor was quoted saying Mr Garvey "would often have difficulty dealing with an unusual or unexpected condition".

    Overriding the autopilot would have caused a plane which crashed to go "nose up" as it would fight to maintain its set height, a report says.

    The light aircraft crashed as it approached Dunkeswell Airfield in East Devon in November last year, killing a family of four including pilot Philip Garvey, 56.

    While the aircraft could still have been controllable, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch report says "recovery would have been beyond his capabilities".

    A light aircraft which crashed as it approached Dunkeswell Airfield, in East Devon, killing four people, may have been brought down by the pilot trying to manually control the landing while the autopilot was still on, an investigation has found.

    Philip Garvey, 56, was flying his wife Ann, 55, their daughter Emily, 23 and son Daniel, 20 to Dunkeswell from Fairoaks Airport in Surrey, close to their home in Woking, in November last year.

    An Air Accidents Investigation Branch report has found that the aircraft went into a sudden climb as it approached the airfield before going into a steep dive.
