  5. Cornwall MP speaks out against plans to reduce the number of MPspublished at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2016

    Anna Varle
    BBC News Online

The Conservative MP for St Austell and Newquay says he doesn't support government plans that could see a new parliamentary seat straddling the Cornwall and Devon border.

    MP

The government wants to reduce the number of MPs - a move it says would save money and make the number of voters in each seat more equal.

Today the Labour MP Pat Glass will get a second reading of her Private Members Bill which aims to stop the reduction in seats - meaning there'd be no so-called Devonwall seat.

The cross-border seat has been widely opposed on both sides of the border - but it's rare for a Private Members Bill to become law and there are many hurdles it has to face in the future.

Steve Double said: "We will be getting rid of 73 MEPs, and I know lots of people wonder what MEPs do, but whatever they do do, all that work will be moved to the House of Commons."

"The idea originally came from my husband," said the 76-year-old. "He talked about it quite a lot and I thought yuck, it sounds horrible and I just don't want to know.

"But then he sent me literature, I read it through and I thought it is not quite so horrible after all. In fact they are very caring with their patients. That was about 25 years ago and I have been signed up ever since."
