    Torquay United midfielder Damon Lathrope has been ruled out for much of the rest of the season.

    The 27-year-old needs surgery on a groin injury that has restricted him to just 10 appearances this season.

    "The chances are he's going to be out until sometime around April," manager Kevin Nicholson told BBC Radio Devon.

    "It's really unfortunate for him as his season never really got going and it looks like it's virtually ended before he had had a chance to do anything."

  5. Landslide inquest: Jury sent home for the daypublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2016

    The jury at the inquest into the death of Susan Norman has not yet reached a conclusion and has gone home for the night. 

    Mrs Norman, a grandmother and great grandmother, died after a landslide engulfed her home in Looe on 22 March 2013.

    The jury inquest at Truro Magistrates Court inquest began on 7 November. The hearing will resume on Friday morning.

    Ted Slade, a 13-year-old ski racer from Kingsbridge, Devon, has been selected to the England Under 14 Alpine Ski Squad and will also race for Great Britain in a Youth International FIS Race in Andorra next year.

    The talented skier, who attends Kingsbridge Community College, currently trains with the British Ski Academy in Italy as well as training in the UK, including Alpine Squad training weekends throughout the year. 

    Ted says his goals for the season are “to win the British Championships, and qualify for more international races”.

    Police are continuing to investigate after a man's body was found in a wheelie bin.

    Brett Edwards, 37, has appeared in court charged with murder after the body of 30-year-old James Woodhouse was found at Mr Edwards' address in Okehampton Road, Exeter.

    The murder is alleged to have taken place between November 10 and 21.

    A second man is still being questioned in connection with the death of Mr Woodhouse, whose body was found by police on Monday afternoon.

    Mr Woodhouse, originally from the North West, is thought to have lived in Exeter for seven years.

    Judge Mercer adjourned the case for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Thursday December 22, 2016.

    New research has shown that while there has been some recovery to beaches in the summer months since the 2013/14 storms, these have largely been wiped out in the following winters.

    Previous research led by Plymouth University – published in March 2016, external – showed the 2013/14 storms were the most energetic to hit Europe’s Atlantic coastline since records began in 1948.

    The Eden Project's Festival of Light and Sound opens to the public tomorrow.

    The event has been devised by light artist Chris Levine, who led Glastonbury’s laser tribute to David Bowie. He says that the Eden event is his biggest and most ambitious yet.

    Visitors will walk out on to the Eden viewing platform to see the biomes and the plant displays "painted with festive colours".

    The Mediterranean Biome is the stage for an after-dark experience, with a choreographed performance of music and light.

    Goalkeeper Martin Rice has joined Truro City for a fourth time.

    The 30-year-old, who has also played for Exeter City and Torquay United, was a free agent having left Gosport Borough by mutual consent.

    He first moved to Treyew Road on loan from Torquay in the summer of 2008, moving permanently in 2009 after his release from the Gulls.

    He returned to Plainmoor in 2011 but came back in 2015 for the season before initially leaving in May.

    Seaton Tramway has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Artistic, Cultural & Learning Experience’ category of this year’s South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

    The awards ceremony will be held on 2 February in the brand new Lansdown Suite at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

    This year saw a record of 602 entries across the South West, and the team of judges undertook a record 380 visits, selecting a total of 132 Finalists and five Highly Commended in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

    Bude won the best coastal resort and the Lost Gardens of Heligan won the best UK leisure attraction with the Eden project in second place.

    A 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing before a crown court judge charged with murder.

    Brett Edwards spoke only to confirm his name during a short hearing in front of Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, the Recorder of the City of Exeter.

    Mr Edwards, of Okehampton Road, is charged with the murder of 30-year-old James Woodhouse (pictured above), whose body was found in a wheelie bin at his address.  

    Mr Warren Robinson, defending, said Mr Edwards denies being involved in any incident of violence or any attempt to conceal the body. He did not apply for bail.

    Police are appealing for information to help trace this man in connection with an assault on a 70-year-old man in Falmouth.

    The assault happened on the coastal footpath at Trefusis Point around 12:20 on Saturday 8 October.

    The victim, from West Sussex, was walking his dog with friends when the dog approached two Springer Spaniel type dogs being walked by another man.

    Police said an argument broke out over the dogs and the 70-year-old was punched in the face, causing a black eye.

    The NSPCC says more than 50 people have contacted them on a new hotline to report concerns about sexual abuse in football, within the first two hours of its operation.

    Nearly 20 of those calls have resulted in information being passed to the police. 

    The hotline was set up as four ex-footballers, including Steve Walters from Plymouth, spoke publicly about being abused by coaches when they were children.

    The government's being urged to set out how it plans to spend the extra £700m pounds which has been allocated for flood defences. 

    Yesterday afternoon the rail line at Cowley Bridge in Exeter finally reopened after the River Exe caused "severe damage" to the track.

    The Labour MP Mary Creagh - who chairs the Commons Environmental Audit Committee - says ministers only promised £12m for mobile defences for infrastructure. 

    She's calling for a nationwide strategy to ensure transport networks are protected.
