    The Cornwall-based charity ShelterBox - which helps victims of disasters around the world, external -  said it was "delighted" to have the backing of Homeland actor Damian Lewis in its latest campaign.

    A spokesman for ShelterBox said: "As the battle to retake Mosul from Islamic State continues, the need for shelter and humanitarian aid has reached an unprecedented scale."

    Torquay United midfielder Luke Young is likely to miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee ligaments.

    The 23-year-old tore a medial ligament in the Gulls' 2-0 loss at Tranmere.

    The former Plymouth Argyle player missed much of last season after a similar injury in the other knee.

    "It's another real blow for him. He took it as well as you'd expect and hopefully he'll see the positive, kick on and come back stronger," manager Kevin Nicholson told BBC Sport.

    A man was hit over the head with a large spanner before his murderer drowned him in a pond, a court has heard. 

    David Alderson was found dead, face down in a pond at a disused mine near Bissoe, Cornwall in January 2014.

    Today, one of the accused, Kevin Cooper of Poldory Way, Carharrack has been giving evidence.

    He told Truro Crown Court  he saw the second defendant, Trewen Kevern of Tresillian Road, Falmouth hit Mr Alderson over the back of the head with a spanner as they were standing next to a pond.

    He told the jury Mr Alderson "fell flat on his face and then Mr Kevern put his foot on the back of his head while his face was in the water".

    Both men deny the murder. The retrial continues.

    "Bored stiff" 89-year-old Joe Bartley is "over the moon" after landing himself a job at a bar and restaurant.

    Ex-serviceman Joe from Paignton in Devon made headlines after putting an ad in his local paper saying he was "dying of boredom" and wanted a job.

    Now he will be cleaning and tidying at the local Cantina Kitchen and Bar. 

    Joe said: "Most importantly for me, I'll be out meeting and talking to people which is what I have missed living in the flat." 

    He said that after his wife Cassie died two years ago he had been very lonely and described living on his own as "solitary confinement". 

    "The first thing I did when I heard about the job was pour myself a stiff drink," he said. 

    "It's been a whirlwind in the past couple of days."

    The family of Kirstie Tancock have thanked her two donors who "gave her the extra five amazing years with us".

    Her family has announced this morning that the 27-year-old died "peacefully and pain free".

    She was born with cystic fibrosis and had had two double lung transplants.

    As well as being an organ donation campaigner, Kirstie was a personal trainer, fitness pole dancing, aerial hoop and silks instructor.

    Bored 89-year-old Joe Bartley has got himself a job - at a bar and restaurant.

    Ex-serviceman Joe, from Paignton, made headlines around the world after putting an ad in his local paper saying he was "dying of boredom" and wanted a job.

    Kate Allen of the nearby Cantina Kitchen and Bar said: "Not many people are that pro-active, let alone an 89-year-old so I could not let him go.

    "I liked him straight away when I spoke to him on the phone."

    She said Joe, who starts on Sunday, would be helping out clearing tables and other tasks.

    "We're really happy to have him," she said.

    A 16-year-old boy was punched in the face by two men in an unprovoked attack, police say.

    The men also stamped on the boy's head during the assault in Armada Way, Plymouth, which happened between 15:15 and 15.30 on Sunday 27 November.

    The assault happened opposite the Holiday Inn - two men walked past the victim in the street and punched him in the face before throwing him to the floor and stamping on his head.

    The men are described as white, in their early 20s, of slim build and wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey Adidas T-shirt.

    Supporters of a proposal to put a temporary night shelter for homeless people in Exeter's city centre say if it doesn't go ahead there's a higher risk people will die on the streets this winter.

    But some businesses in the West Quarter are worried it will put off customers.

    “If we don’t get the go ahead on Monday there will be less beds for people, there’ll be more people left on the streets over the Christmas period and the winter months, the risks will go up for those individuals. The chances are – and I don’t want to say this – but we could potentially have some deaths on our streets.”

    Today is the last day for comments and planners will make a decision on Monday. The city council says neighbouring businesses and home owners have been consulted and their responses will be considered.

    Both of Looe's lifeboats launched yesterday in the hunt for a missing 16-year-old girl.

    The new Atlantic Class 85 Sheila & Alan Tongue II and the D Class Ollie Naismith lifeboats, along with Looe Coastguard team and Tamar Coastguard teams searched from Portwrinkle to Rame Head from 15:00 yesterday.

    Both the coastal Path, cliff edge and the sea up to Rame Head were searched. Nothing was found and as darkness was falling all units were stood down at 17:00.

    Exeter City Council says a planning inquiry looking into the refusal of a housing development on Exeter College’s playing field in Wear Barton Road has been cancelled, external after the council gave the go-ahead to a second application on the same site.

    The inquiry was due to start on 6 December at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum but because Exeter City Council’s planning committee recently granted a second application for a similar scheme, the hearing will no longer take place.

    Redruth winger Lewis Vinnicombe is good enough to play in the Championship, according to head coach Marek Churcher.

    Vinnicombe, 32, spent the 2006-07 season with Cornish Pirates in the second tier, but has spent the rest of his career at the Rec.

    He has eight tries this season, helping the Reds to 10 wins from 13 games and fourth spot in National Two South.

    A Devon council is being reported to the Information Commissioner, accused of being overly secretive over controversial plans to privatise the vast majority of its services.

    Conservative-run South Hams Council is researching setting up a company, along with West Devon council, to take over 95% of its services. 

    But opposition councillors say they've been refused access to legal advice on the idea.

    The authority says all councillors will get access to the information in February.

    Cllr John Birch said: "Where information or legal advice is received on the setting up of what is going to radically change the face of this council, then it is important that all documents, warts and all, should be disclosed to all councillors, and not just a few."

    • Operation Bann The investigation into the 1984 rape of a 17 year old woman in Paignton. Following a review of the material held Sam Robinson, 50, was arrested and subsequently convicted in 2014, receiving a 18 year custodial sentence.
    • Operation Butterfield – The investigation into the 1984 rape of a 16 year old girl in Torquay. Following a review of material held a DNA profile was obtained which was a match to a local male in the Torbay area. Enquiries revealed he was now deceased. The victim was traced and informed
