  2. Shoal of fish 'relaxing' in Padstow Harbourpublished at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    Sian Davies
    BBC News Online

A large shoal of fish has been spotted 'relaxing' in Padstow Harbour.

The fish, which could be sprat, sardine or herring according to one expert, were captured on film by Padstow Sealife Safaris.

James Wright, Curator at the National Marine Aquarium, said it was difficult to give an exact identification.

"Shoaling behaviour is normal as it helps individual fish avoid predators and be more efficient in finding good food sources," he said.

"In the footage there looks to be a lighter shape that moves towards the shoal from the bottom left corner, but the response of the shoal is quite relaxed, so I don’t think it’s a predator.

"I think it’s more likely the fish are resting after having fed and are waiting for the tides to change, to give them a more suitable feeding opportunity.

"Once the tides change they will then move and spread out to search for food. In the meantime they are relaxing in the calm waters of the harbour."
